Duncan,

I've just been going through your dats & there's a couple of questions :-

1) There's 93 files that have been removed in the new "Commodore C64 - Magazines - [PRG]" that aren't picked up in any of the other C64 sets.  Is this intentional or a mistake ?  I've attached a ClrMamePro dat of just these files that were removed.

2) Can you point me to where I can download the new files added to "Commodore C64 - Magazines - [PRG]" & "Commodore C64 - Collections - High Voltage" ?  I had some of the files but not all.

Thanks ;)

Commodore C64 - Magazines - [PRG] (TOSEC-v2010-03-07_CM).dat has errors on header:
. description misses an ")"
. in author you have 4 quotes and 2 are enough :P

I'm a bit confused how those errors slipped back into the dat, anyhow I've corrected them and uploaded again. I'll upload the C64 files this weekend.

1) Those files are not magazines but games produced by some Spanish people. It looks like they belong in the games folder. But they certainly don't belong to magazines. I'll move them to the correct location and update the corresponding DAT in order to keep the whole set consistent.

2) I'll try to upload those files this weekend.

Cheers,
Duncan

No problem ;)

I'm not missing many files for any upload btw (eg. only 3 missing for High Voltage) :)

Seperated disk magazines from 'Magazines' and moved to new category 'Diskmags'; much better this way. Added 500+ new diskmags and renamed even more.

Doubled amount of D64 demos. Many '19xx' and names corrected. Many 'hacked' flags added.
Next correlating different dumps like D64, PRG, T64 etc and extracting valuable information. Still a lot of work to do.

DATs to '/renamers-wip/DuncanTwain' on our TOSEC FTP
New images to gorski's FTP

Cheers

Speaking of which, can you upload your new files (i.e. new images you've added to WIP DATs) to gorski FTP when you can please...

We need to make sure no new files are 'missing' before doing a release.
Title: Re: Duncan's WIP
Post by: Cassiel on October 17, 2010, 02:38:10 AM
"Commodore C64 - Coverdisks - [TAP]" on gorski appears damaged (as well as having a misleading date).

In fact, it may be an idea that we implement a policy of uploading DATs compressed (with whatever, doesn't matter) to aid verification/validation....

Matched all files on 'title' and 'publisher' to find missing dates. A lot of date fixes applied!

First step after the 2011-01-19 release is to correct publishers across DATs and removal of wrongly assigned hacked attributes.

Also Duncan you also need to remove the duplicate files.

In dat "Commodore C64 - Demos - [D64] (TOSEC-v2010-12-30_CM).dat" you have 3 sets with duplicated publishers that need to be fixed. The third has probably an invalid "scene group/scener".

- Duplicates across dats

Amend publisher attributes.
Remove incorrect hacked attributes.
Rename cracktros, mainly publishers

Made a start with
- matching files, ie T64 against PRG etc.
- correcting 'publishers' across DATs.

Tool created to match T64 files against PRG files, works like a charm. Enables me to get exact matches on file content and rename file accordingly. This is the first step to correct filenames. When eventually file relationships are created it's 'just' a matter of verifying and renaming if needed.
Title: Re: Duncan's WIP
Post by: PandMonium on February 22, 2011, 03:08:12 PM
Does it matches sets based on the content comparing each file by hash or something like that? If so it is indeed valuable. Not that it will improve any of the already existent errors in all sets (eg.: if a date is wrong, it will continue wrong) but it surely may help to at least get ride of the many variations across dats for the similar sets (eg.: titles with caption or other small differences, sets with exact date where others have 19xx and so on).

In any case, use it carefully to avoid introducing new errors too!

Have been fixed last week.
Title: Re: Duncan's WIP

It will eventually improve the overall quality of the DATs. Correlating files means that filenames get consistent and 'correct eachother' by taking date or publisher information from one to the other file.
Correlation in done by an exact (byte-by-byte) comparison of the file contents (ie. D64 entires). I've alread seen some staggering results, and will share them on the forum soon.

Adding new files plays a small part in this. Main goal is to find errors in the current DATs.

Keep in mind that sometimes a game got 2 publisher with different year or same publisher but a different year...or even published by 3 different companies, the variations could be alot.
Just saying so you don't auto merge 1 game with lets say 2 different TNC names into 1 and then delete the info that it was actually another release of it by different publisher.

I know from the Atari8bit DATs that those cases often happen, alot games got for example published as cassette by company x and on disk by company y.
Title: Re: Duncan's WIP
Post by: Duncan Twain on February 22, 2011, 06:52:32 PM
For now it will be used to find the errors. If a release say in P00 format is byte exact to a PRG file one could savely assume that it's the same release. If the file name differs, that would be the start for investigation.
There's no auto merge, just finding the hard to spot errors.

- P00
- D64

Yes i understood the process and i find it really useful. Even more if it you can do it for other file types of other systems too but that would need an extra amount of time to understand the existent image formats and i'm not sure all are well documented.
My last sentence is just that even if the process will dramatically improve dats consistence it wont mean the information itself was correct from the start. It is highly needed but combined with manual verification too of many of these sets in the future.

An example from C64:
With this instead of having "Barmy Bills Flight of Fun (198x)(Publisher)" and "Barmy Bill's Flight of Fun (1984-10-20)(Publisher)" you could fix both and have all the sets with "Barmy Bill's Flight of Fun (1984-10-20)(Publisher)", still that does not mean it is correct and in the end it could be: "Barmy Bill's Flight of Fun, The (1994-10-20)(Publisher)[cr Oracle]"

Anyway i really like the idea, TOSEC is full of title (and other fields) variations in different dats, any step forward improving quality is good, specially on these easily noticeable errors.

TKaos also makes a valid point, one more reason to be careful with it. Still, since you say you're comparing the content of each image file by file it will match only exactly equal software on different formats, so you will catch a lot of inconsistencies with it. I can find a lot of these easily in C64, even in the same dat, these 2 seem a lot similar (at least the setnames):

Commodore C64 - Games - [T64]
Code: [Select]
Duomato - Wheel of Fortune (1995)(Assassin Software)[cr F4CG]
Duomato Wheel of Fortune (1995)(Assasin)[cr F4CG][tr en]
Title: Re: Duncan's WIP

Well if you want to make it perfect then take the biggest games dat in C64, check the images 1by1 and then compare those images with the other games dats, that way you can make sure that the info you put into the other ones is atleast correct for sure cause you checked all.
Title: Re: Duncan's WIP
Post by: Duncan Twain on February 22, 2011, 07:24:32 PM
Games is one the list. Haven't worked on it at all.

Like you guys know there's lots and lots of work to do on the C64 DATs. I intend to first throw (home made) tools at them and later, if things are a bit more tidier, start doing manual corrections.

Hi
Well its a good way to sort d64 image because a good chunk are just a single prg in the image were as in the extracted prg is named right and the
d64 dat are named wrongly with missing data like dates etc.. .
Just think about putting a windows exe into a iso image , least if the internal data is 100% with a the single exe u know its that program anyways to name it properly.
Was also like tape images were its a single prg in the there gets around the image difference u want to name by the data to save time.
Also to u might have altered images were people have redone or changed like label so u get a new file least this way u get what the image actually is and can make it a alt.
Should help improve naming across formats and keep it all consistent .
Lot of c64 disk were level packed later into a single with trainers the lot like stuff from anubis.
So u will have a lot prg's match the ones in the d64 images and tapes.

Good work duccan

Post by: Duncan Twain on February 22, 2011, 07:37:23 PM
Oh, and it gets better. Next improvement will be the use of iAN CooG's UNP64. This allows me to 'unpeal' packed image by removing compression and thus having an even better comparison for single file images.
Title: Re: Duncan's WIP
Post by: TKaos on February 22, 2011, 09:06:46 PM
This might be of interest for you, the tape images you have of this software should all get (Side B) and would be nice if you could put [side A ATR8bit] or something similar into more info.
You can also copy&paste the other part of the filename I guess (without the [BASIC]). :P

Dampfmaschine (1985)(Europa Computer Club)(DE)(Side A)[side B C64][BASIC]
Seeschlacht (1984)(Europa Computer Club)(DE)(Side A)[side B C64]
TKKG - Das Leere Grab im Moor (1985)(Europa Computer Club)(DE)(Side A)[side B C64][BASIC]

If I find more of them I'll pass you a message.

[EDIT]
Found next one but from educational software:
Deutsch-Stunde 3, Die (19xx)(Europa Computer Club)(DE)(Side A)[side B C64][BASIC].cas
Maybe you can find out the date. :)

Title: Re: Duncan's WIP

About the "same game different publisher" thing I was talking earlier, this is a real nice example, when the tool tells you "here look this is the same game so all should have same name" (for example):

Dig Dug (1982)(Atari)(US)(proto).xex
Dig Dug (1982)(Atari)(US).rom
Dig Dug (1983)(Atari)(US).rom
Dig Dug (1984)(Datasoft)(US).atx
Dig Dug (1985)(U.S. Gold)(GB).cas

I don't know if you have to deal with such weird stuff in C64 too but it can be really complicated and if you have a DAT that was made years ago and have a game like this with only "Atari" as publisher it can be very complicated to sort stuff out and name it all good.

Why the extra classification? Does weather it was charged for or not really require a new genre?

There's no hard and fast rules on the subject, but personally I'm not a fan of splitting images in this way (have posted my views on this before). Seems fairly pointless at best, and needless complicated at worst (IF you do it/and maintain it, properly).

Yeah well with a system like c64 the file count can be to big for one catergory.
Same as the games need to remove pd and stuff seeing there is still a heap to add in the future.

Finally found some time to gain time by writing tooling to generate DAT files automatically! No more header edditing again. Tool takes the released DATs and compare them to the WIP folders and spits out the new DAT (if needed).

Guys,

It's uploaded to TOSEC ftp's folder \Tools\Dir2Dat. You'll need Microsoft.Net Framework 4 to run it. Make sure to change the Dir2Dat.exe.config with you're own settings.

I've run several tests, but not comprehensively. Please reports any bugs and I'll try to fix them asap.

Have fun with it,

Quite a lot files found in the wrong category, need to be fixed.
Same files (different filetype) found across different category.

Will create database to include md5, sha1, crc2 hash of:
- original file (ie. d64)
- unpacked file (ie prg within d64, t64, tap)
- decrunched file (unpack unp64)

Next compare hashed to find obvious mistakes.

Database created with hashes of >400000 files (and growing) to give insight in collection status and missing entries.

1 - removed label of all d64 files, hashed and matched against tosec files; a couple of hundred files added.
2 - extracted contents of known filetypes (p00, lnx, t64, d64) and hashed. Matched against tosec files; >7000 files found with same content but different title. Need to go through them.
3 - same as 2, to look for incorrect location; some corrections made. Mainly moved files from 'collections' to correct location.
4 - same as 2, but now looking for files to add.

Database nearly finished:
- images: 558.740
- image entries: 3.855.239
- images entry extracts: need to call unp226 to remove compression and put hashes in database. Expected tripling amount of image entries.

Found so far:
- 328 wrong image locations (files that can be moved from Collection/Compilationsto more specific location)
- >10.000 additions
- 25.594 images with matching content and different name

Approx. 1400 files moved from 'Collections' and 'Compilcations' to their correct location after exact matching file entries of .D64 files.

Loading for instance all the entries in a D64 into a database, calculating the hash code of the entries works *very* well. For each entry in the D64 I get the bytes, concatinate them into one stream, sort it and hash. This again is stored in the database to make matching *fast*.
Using this method (and visually verifying they're the same) I found *many* mistakes in the collection and found a lot of additions from other sources.

Will post results soon.

- Created DATs for Commodore - DTV.
- Recognised some more D64 images in 'Collections' and moved to correct place.
- Still many Images with the same name but different locations, still moving.
- Many 'date' fixes across all DATs; matching images with different names analysed and corrected.

I'm not quite sure if this is the right section of the forum to be asking this: if not, I'm sorry. Here it goes: I've come across some old c64 type-ins in a magazine (Commander Magazine, to be precise) that I believe are not in TOSEC. Duncan, are you the right person to get in contact with concerning this matter? I already have a FTP account, so I might be able to create a sub-folder within it in order to submit them. I hope this is of interest and thank you for your TOSEC c64 labours ;)

Hi there AntiPontifex,

Always seeking new stuff. If you can upload it to TOSEC ftp I'll have a look at it.

Cheers,
Duncan

Moving a lot of images from Collections and Compilations to their correct location. No new files will be added for the coming release, only corrections.
Found a lot of matching images in several categories, correcting them as well.

Hi,

I've compiled a list of matching files located in different folders. For instance 'Mad Party Fucker v.1.0 (1985)(Stretch & The Spy).prg' is present in Demos and its counterpart 'Mad Party Fucker v1.0 (1985)(Stretch & The Spy)[a].p00' can be found under Games. In some cases it's obvious where the image (and alts) need to go, but in other cases it isn't. Especially in the area of magazines.

Can someone please have a look at the attached listing and make suggestions/corrections via this thread?

I know that AntiPontifex already want to help out.

Cheers,
Duncan

Hopefully people can help a bit (where they can) with reclassifying now you've posted the list...

Nice one....

What's the story with 'Misc' though? Are these literally just blank images?

We've been trying to move away from including these... especially when emulators can simply create them themselves.

Those blank images were already there, only now recognised as such.

Duncan, one thing I want to say about blank images.  I remember one game, Mail Order Monsters, that had to have a save disk with a special title.  The game would not make this disk (if I remember correctly).  Are you verifying that the game can make a working character/data disk?

Good point, I'll put it on the list to check. Probably the same with 'Garfield' disks.

FYI... I left out the 'Misc' DAT for now. Let's revisit for next time.

I'm keen to get 'pointless' blank images out of TOSEC (i.e. synthetic ones generated by an emu of whatever), though obviously if a physical disk (which just happens to be blank) was included in a a boxed game then that's a bit different.

Starting work on the first release of 2013, which will only include fixes. Attached a list of roms found in multiple locations. For instance a game found in both 'games' and 'previews'. Final location should be determined, please post corrections in this topic.
Cheers,
Duncan.

Could you please have a look a the list below, source + target have the same content but a different name. Could you find out what name to use?

Focussed this time on correcting and adding Z64 files. Many of the new additions have 'duplicates'. As they mostly are composed of 4 files the chances of having one or two duplicated with another Z64 set are present.

"Commodore C64 - Collections - Derbyshire Ram (TOSEC-v2015-05-25_CM)" has lots of 'double description' errors where sets do not have a unique name, can you please fix.

Also (not a big deal for this release, but something to look at later) I've noticed the latest improved TDE picks up a bunch of new naming errors previously missed. Something to look at for next time.  :)

That probably because there are multiple filetypes in that folder present. Not much to do about, it's a bit overkill IMHO to create subfolders [D64], [G64], etc.

Do you mean names like this: "(B)arty-Demo", that's the name of the demo and I know I've fixed a couple (as in created more DatExplorer errors. I think it's a bug in DatExplorer that it can't handle special characters in titles). Or did you mean something else?

Regards,
Duncan..

Either way it needs [a] or whatever. Same filename throws up errors in CMP (and others) and will rename file to whatever-0 or something. No good.

Re TDE, no I mean real errors. Use most recent TDE and you see what I mean... wrong country codes for example (UK rather than GB) previously missed because missread as Media Label and accepted.

Derbyshire Ram? You going to upload?

What's with the new [BAS] DATs? Why they have PRG files in, are they misnamed?

OK, enough questions...  :)

Those PRG files are actually are a specific type of PRG file, that's the reason to place them apart.

hmm, that will be tricky (ie will need to write some code to do that in bulk). How bad is it to keep it for now?

So shouldn't they be in the [PRG] DATs still, but with [BASIC Format] or something as [moreinfo]?

The [XXX] split with DATs is for file format. These look like they still *.prg files where you would expect them to be *.bas.

The DAT can't be included as it is, throws up errors. I have split between [D64] and [G64] since this makes sense anyway since it's 10,000 odd files.

Created tool to reconstruct Z64 files. It basically reads all D64 files, splits them in 4 parts and tries to link them to decompressed Z64 parts (found by content instead of filename).

Why doing this? Many collectors have removed duplicate files from Z64 sets, but it actually inherent to the way they're organised. Take for instance a D64 file which is half empty. The empty track/sectors will be compressed the same way for each D64 image and thus result in the 'duplicate' entry.

Having encountered lots (really lots) of incomplete Z64 sets it was a rewarding challenge to reconstruct them.

Title: Re: Duncan's WIP
Post by: Duncan Twain on November 13, 2018, 08:03:57 PM
we passed the 100K # games in the C64 collection. Any idea's how to reduce the amount of files in one folder?
a) find D64's containing more than one game and move then to 'compilations'
b) create more categories (sports, arcade, etc)
c) other

(a) should really be done anyway but probably not going to reduce the numbers that much

(b) I don't really like, likely to end in disagreements over exactly where something belongs - to pick something from PC games just as an example, does Football Manager belong in "sports", "strategy", etc.?

(c) maybe something as simple as "Games - # to L", "Games - M to Z". Possibly unbalanced, maybe makes for more work?

Per letter possibly (not group of letters). I don't love the solution, but is the most objective and VERY clear to follow.
I believe this is the best solution:
\Games\[D64]\A\
Grouping letters is a bit awkward. Needs balancing and possible future rebalancing. Single letters are clean and straightforward.

Categories are a big mess. This is why such things are done by metadata tags nowadays (and something can have multiple tags).

BTW compilations is something to clean up ANYWAY.

EDITED: To make more clear what I would vote if I had a vote.

I vote for mictlantecuhtle's C of a sort
using letters rather than categories also keeps the file/path length as short as possible

As comparison: the Amiga games ADF dat used to be split up into letters in older releases, now it's one big mess.

a simple way should be ,sorting by publisher of original software and or group

only a idea  ;)

as example

Panzer (1987)(Wicked Software) is the main original one
Panzer (1987)(Wicked Software)[a] is the other non orig

so it can be moved to (cracked/modded by folders) that yould make the main folder/dat alot thinner

what you mean?

thank you all for the suggestions made. I don't like the letter categories, but never thought of creating subfolders from publishers.
I do like the idea from MdGheist, creating a set of good/preferred dumps and move the rest somewhere else. But then again, how to determine a good dump...

What about splitting per year? That would limit the overall set and create manageable sets per year.

Per year is worth considering, definitely. You're bound to end up with some kind of bell curve, with really full folders for the middle years tapering up / down at either end, but probably neater than any other solution.

Per year is indeed interesting, but you will bump on many inconsistencies and one more thing that will need to be more "careful" about (sometimes the year is confused by things like when the crack came). Yes it is already important to have correct year, but if it becomes a folder separator, it becomes way more important.

The suggestion of "good/original" (like a no-intro part haha) vs "rest" is also good, but again, you will face way too much re-organization AND you will end up with a huge "rest" category. So I don't think it will help.

There is one thing you need to consider Duncan! You have to look at how a user will LOOK for a title.
Imagine let say that you want to check out Obliterator. Do you remember the year? You definitely remember the name though.
This is why letter is good.
Also because it is the most "objective" metadata of a game. We even call game collections (or movies etc.) "titles" some times, exactly for this reason.
(that said, indeed there are games with more than one official title, usually because of region issues)

Another classification that could help you split things up (but even I don't like it that say it)... is to separate multi-disk from single disk. Multi-disk are way less than single disk, but because they are erm... multiple, still make the list big. Single disk, are WAY more, but only a single entry (plus variances) per title.

The more I think of it, I believe letter is the most clean/straightforward/objective.
Note that I believe whatever is chosen, it has to become the splitting option for ALL machines (when splitting is needed) -i.e. for the whole TOSEC.

Hope you find a way soon.

I'm using games splitted dats in 3 or 4 parts.I did it almost 5 years ago.

Meantime I'm switching from public into internal.
