Title: Cassiel WIP (v2009-12-27-v2011-01-19)
Post by: idoru on January 02, 2010, 09:18:21 AM
A couple of questions/things for you if you please.... :P

1) Please get rid of these Promotional dats, there's no need for them & they look quite silly.  Everything is already flagged as demos so they don't need there own dat with 5 files inside.  Already a few people have made it aware that they've pointed at them & laughed, unsurprisingly IMO.

2) What did you use to convert Memory Manager v1.0b (1999)(Magillicutty, R. Bubba)(PAL)(PD)[h] in N64 Applications ?  I cannot recreate the checksum when converting from the only copy I can find online/other dats.  Also, out of interest, why were a couple of the files removed from the last dat? Unix SRAM Upload Utility v1.0 (1997)(Madman)(PD), View N64 Test Program (199x)(-)(PD)

3) SNES.  Are all the hacks really un-nameable?  [h271] is getting silly.  I had a very quick look & loaded a few of the Super Mario World hacks at random...

Super Mario World (1991)(Nintendo)(US)[h205]  --> Super Mario Extreme (2004)(Clockworkz)(US)[h][Super Mario World]
Super Mario World (1991)(Nintendo)(US)[h236]  --> Super Mario World - The New Lands (2003)(DarkMatt)(US)[h][Super Mario World]
Super Mario World (1991)(Nintendo)(US)[h271]  --> Super Mario World (1991)(Nintendo)(US)[h HH]

Also games that are flagged as (PD) i believe should be in a dedicated Public Domain dat to be consistent.  The games dats should be limited to commercial games.

In the Sega Pico - Educational DAT:
All versions of "A Year At Pooh Corner" need to be renamed to "Year At Pooh Corner, A".

Appreciated, but did create it after some thought. Basically, having an issue with some promotional/demo carts that don’t really belong anywhere else (and I know I have more coming up to add later). Example: SMS/MKIII – “TecToy Christmas 1992 Promo Cartridge (1992)(Sega - TecToy)(BR)” – this is basically a digital static advert on cart bundled in Brazil with SMS. It’s not a game, nor really a demo or app either. Toyed with using ‘sampler’ like you use in ISO, but its not that either (not like you actual play anything or see any footage).

Suggestions? (Bear in mind this isn’t isolated to just this dump....). Promo DAT was the best solution I could think of for these awkward dumps.

Memory Manager v1.0b (1999)(Magillicutty, R. Bubba)(PAL)(PD)[h]
AFAIR it was sent to me with a few other images. We already had the others in DAT, so added it in. Looking at it in hex editor compared to other, it looks like it could be a load of crap anyway though.....

Unix SRAM Upload Utility v1.0 (1997)(Madman)(PD)
Took it out since needed to double check something (was basically redoing N64 apps, fw, demos), and forgot to add it back in. My bad, will get it back in ASAP.

View N64 Test Program (199x)(-)(PD)
Now ‘Lem's Crap Test (199x)(Lem)(PD)’, was wrongly named/in wrong DAT.

3) SNES.  Are all the hacks really un-nameable?  [h271] is getting silly.  I had a very quick look & loaded a few of the Super Mario World hacks at random...

Agreed. But remember I haven’t really worked on this DAT since the last (last) release, other than fixing obvious or new TNC rules/errors. I’m currently sweeping thru the nin/sega/snk dats and adding language flags and will address this at the same time.

Are we definitely having 'A' at the end now? THe current TNC contridicts itself regarding this....

Yup, it was decided some time ago and is present here : http://www.tosecdev.org/index.php/tosec-naming-convention?start=2
If there is any error somewhere please report :P (may be in pdf file, haven't checked)

Well, my studies run around my computer/internet so is easy to be online to give easy tips like that :P even if i kinda suck at english as my supervisor pointed in my thesis :( anyway need to get back to it because i have the intermediate deadline already this Monday and a lot to do.

Sorry about the pdf, it gives some work to update it so i haven't done it yet but i find it useful because it can have a nice format and is useful to read offline :\

Agreed, Samplers isn't perfect (& not everything in the ISO Samplers dats are "playable") - & I'm also not sure if one of Promotional/Samplers is any better/worse as a name than the other.  Maybe for now we just stick to one of them & see if thoughts come up with anything better.  Law of averages shows that Samplers is "ahead" atm, so you happy with Promotional --> Samplers for the time being ?

Can you take another look at N64 Applications in that case ?  Currently Memory Manager is the sole unavailable TOSEC rom from the entire set.

I have no issue with Promotional -> Samplers, will upload renamed DATs when I get a chance. Though not perfect either, do consider ‘Promotional’ as a category – this is what all these are after all…..

I’ll make sure the image gets disseminated and I’ll get the other added back in.

Will upload these (and some other Sega) DATs hopefully later in the week.

Thanks.

Duncan uploaded something in a new (non-standard it seems) 7z format - which I've just uploaded to gorski's.  I can't open the 7z file though (& it's not possible for me to update software installs on this PC at the moment).  So, if anyone can open the 7z - can you leave the files extracted on the ftp for me/everyone :P

Thanks gorski,  I've posted a new fixdat in Duncan's thread as there's still a whole bunch of files missing.  You may need to do the conversion again if we get another weird 7z.

The 7zip file is in lzma2, a new method growing in propularity. For future postings I'll stick to the older lzma format.

If you just upload *.dat files then you could also just stick to *.zip, we all have fast connections and it doesn't matter much if we have to download 1mb more. :)

Thanks Duncan.

Personally I'd be more than happy if 7z didn't even exist.  I'd rather use a few more MB/GB than spend the huge increase in time/processing for extracting/compressing.

Sorry about that, from now on I'll upload in standard zip or rar format.

It wasn't aimed at you specifically Duncan, just at 7z in general.  It's a backward step IMO over rar/zip - not just in speed (or lack thereof).

This time?!   ;)

Most were Publisher typos/consistency (thanks for the help!). Pico and Virtual Boy were some corrections based on recent work by Matt Cowering re his GoodTools.

Mega Drive was a whole new bunch of additions again (MD is my current focus) plus some smaller additions for Mark III/Game Gear.

About Gamecube:
"(EU)(en)" I'm not sure if it's correct since we only write (en) if it's something like (FR)(en) / (DE)(en) etc., also I don't like using (EU) as country at all but that's just my opinion.

Another thing:
Legend of Zelda, The - Ocarina of Time - Master Quest (2003)(Nintendo)(EU)(en)[h]
Legend of Zelda, The - Ocarina of Time - Master Quest (2003)(Nintendo)(EU)(en)[h2]

Are those again fan made hacks so they change the title or anything ?
I don't like the idea to start a new DAT and make the same mistake as in the NES/SNES DATs were we have [h200], isn't it possible to give them a proper naming?

I like the idea of having gamecube files but please if the DAT is made from scratch then try to get it as good as possible else someone has to check the DAT 1 by 1 in some years again.

I presume those "GameCube" games are extracted versions of the N64/64DD emulated roms from the Collector's Edition sets etc.?  If so, they don't belong in a GameCube dat IMO but within the normal N64 dat with a [more info] notification of their origin.

The only GameCube dats that should exist would be for the game discs themselves (ie. a TOSEC-ISO dat) & ones for any homebrew.

Sorry, I meant to wrap around an explanation re GC but was very late when I uploaded DATs.

Correct, these are Zelda Collector’s Edition stuff, not proper ISO/GCM images. It’s a bit of a PITA one.

I did go back and forth on this, but I mainly decided to move them to separate DAT since technically they had been re-programmed somewhat for the GameCube (such has having the controller buttons (and onscreen graphics) changed, and the resolution bumped up etc.).

Also, it’s a bit a fallacy they were extracted from a physical disc… they were simply leaked by the agency hired to port the games to the GC (note the deliberate use of the words ‘port’ and ‘to’!  :) ). There’s also a bunch of debug images floating around from the same source.

You look after TOSEC-ISO though and if you don’t want these included in those DATs (which I totally understand) then I’ll include them in N64 with an appropriate [more info] caveat instead. To be honest, I’d rather not have the damn things included at all for now and just have the real/full GameCube ISO added when you get to it, but ho-hum….

I’ll get this absorbed into N64 sometime this week when I find a bit of time again.

Heh.

Nowhere's ideal for them I agree, but on the whole I  think the best place for them is alongside the rest of N64.

GameCube ISO's are doable & we can include them in the new ISO website.  I never really got into the system myself & only ever got 2 games for it, maybe that would spike some interest in me seeing some of it's releases after I lost interest :P

No problem, I’ll get them added back into N64 within a day or two.

Sounds cool. I hear the Dolphin emulator’s getting pretty good these days too, could be a good excuse to start playing around with that too…   :P
