Hi Cassiel, nice to see you keep working :P
I can check your new datfiles tomorrow or so for errors, about removing those from current-wip, idoru said he would like to be in charge of doing that to know what happens so i wont do it for now at least.

I have also other subject to talk with you (and possibly others) and so will do it know:
I guy from irc (jerry2600, don't know if any of you knows him) contact me and talked he had updated the "Nintendo Super Famicom & Super Entertainment System - Games" datfile, the first problem is that we are delaying a new release so much that any contributions from random people will almost always be done to old datfiles and probably became unuseful since those dats were already changed/updated and so on, he told me he already sent it to idoru but haven't contacted him.

AFAIK you already done something to this datfile but i don't know what, i really appreciate the help of everyone but imho the intention was good but the final product is not, from what i see this datfile comes in the style of the old TOSEC updates, growing them a lot with little care for correctness. The setfiles have doubled or something (+4000 now) and i have been told it was just a kind of merge between 2 dats:
TOSEC - Nintendo Super Famicom & Super Entertainment System - Games from 2007
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (No-InTrOSEC-v2007-04-01_CM)

The 2nd being done by NGEfreak, i've never seen this datfile but it has all sets from no intro not in tosec (like nongood stuff and so on), i think the intention was good in trying to help the project, but also according to our current goals (and i know that No Intro sets are almost always good stuff, no questions in that - they should be added) i don't think adding a thousand new sets without checking names or something is a good plan, anyway you are in charge of those dats and you decide, i can send you the dat for you to scan an gather all those files and eventually add them to the datfile later, imo the datfile (at least the one from 2007) is not that great in aspects like the 100++++ similar hacks without a proper moreinfo flag and only a counter making them different [h2], [h59], [h300], ...

As a final note i can't even check the dat for tnc errors because (i think) i haven't finished implementing support for new cmp xml datfiles and this datfile uses it :S

will upload it to your space anyway :)

No problem, as long as someone knows to do it…

Been really busy this/last week, but will try to reply to some posts/pm’s now whilst I have an hour.

[idoru] did send me the SNES DAT via email. I briefly reviewed and replied to [idoru], but need to look at it closer. My issue (and also spotted by [idoru]) is that there seems to be WAY too many 19xx’s for dates... it doesn't exactly instil confidence in publisher's being 100% right (I mean, why would you go the trouble of checking out the publisher on the title screen but NOT note the year as well...?).

Though if you saying they’ve just copied what is in No-Intro DAT, then this may seem explainable (do No-Intro use year? can’t rem off top of head) though hardly ideal for our purposes. Whilst the current SNES DAT is far from perfect (yet!), I don’t necessarily think dumping in No-Intro re-names without expanding for TOSEC is the right way to go.

Like I say, haven’t had enough time to investigate more though…..

i just saw it briefly, the first problem is it uses the new XML format (which we don't use yet, if you like we can start using it in the future or even fork a new one with more flags to describe a lot of set details one day), but for now we will keep the old one.

I asked how it was done and was told it was a merge (done with datworkshop or something) of the old snes dat + the nointrosec dat by NGEfreak, my concerns are exactly those, with the quality of added sets, i don't know NGEfreak or jerry2600 and i prefer to have new guys working undercontrol of others (like gorski did, with TKaos helping him out so he didn't made mistakes) instead of having now +2000 sets added. First this new datfile and your newer one will probably have differences in sets and i never used datworkshop, no idea of what it is capable of, 2nd these sets use the older country / language codes, also like you said they most certainly will have errors or few data simply because the initial idea was not to do it properly but to just add all no intro sets to it, so quality was not the first goal, that's why you probably found a lot of 19xx and other wrong information. NoIntro project is great and i'm sure they have some king of naming with at least publisher and year but don't know how it was converted (nointro -> tnc).

I guess you will have to investigate, adding the new dumps from them is good and they should be all good dumps i suppose but if we do that at least we should do it with quality or anyone can just blame us of inserting all those files without even renaming them properly :P

Exactly, I don't like that they took other peoples work, done not much changes in filenames without even investigating the images more and then put the files in our DATs.
Doing it that way will just start alot of trouble between us and the No-Intro people and also with having more mistakes in our database.
Title: Re: Cassiel WIP (v2007-03-14-v2009-12-27)
Post by: Cassiel on October 15, 2009, 12:50:04 PM
Well, remember a huge number of dumps in the No-Intro DATs are already in the console DATs in TOSEC. I regularly pick up (full, current) No-Intro ‘ROM sets’ and do a rebuild to see what TOSEC is ‘missing’.

All the 8bit Sega DATs (SMS, GG, SC, SF7 etc) already include ALL images in No-Intro, MESS, GoodTool etc for example.

Any DATs that currently don’t, eventually will include all images from No-Intro or any other major DAT project.

Not to take anything away from the No-Intro boys (I think they’ve done lots of good work), but I don’t think we should just be ‘importing’ No-Intro renames into TOSEC wholesale, without them being checked individually (like you normally would when renaming images).

Well yea that was also my point, check them the way you always do and not just include them with minimal name change.
btw: where's my PM ? :P

Hang on a minute, think I misread:

jerry2600 just took latest No-Intro DAT, and then our latest (public) TOSEC DAT and merged them (with a few cleanups here and there)?

jerry2600 not part of No-Intro then no?

If so then, no – really not liking the sound of any of this. Doesn’t sound very robust, and not very respectful to No-Intro project either.

TKaos - you posted as I was typing, but yes we both on same page exactly :) PM coming, 2min....! (damn distractions)

well i think we all agree in that, they did and do an excellent work and that new dats should be added carefully (if manually checked it would be a good time to even take some screenshots of publishers or groups :P) instead of converting them, for example i could just code something to parse non intro dats and rename them to tnc adding extra info to more info flag but i think this is NOT the way we should do it in our quest for correctness :P
(we have the fine example of this kind of checks in Tandy and how bad they got :P)

I don't know jerry2600 (just know we hangs around foreverchat irc network) nor NGEfreak, he just told me the new dat was a MERGE between our latest official SNES dat + one dat called NoInTrOSEC or something that was something like: NoIntro datfile - TOSEC datfile = NoInTOSEC (a kind of diff).
Just that, thats why i think it is bad, he told me he just did the merge and the dif dat or something was done by NGEfreak, don't know how made the changes to TNC or if there are some without changes because i can't really check manually or automatically (new xml format).

I will have to give some feedback to jerry2600 because i appreciate his interest on helping the project but have to say him that this is not something we need, will probably say that Cassiel is already working on these dats and is adding new sets manually or something, normally he will take it good but we never know, there is always strange people around emu scene :P (he could start thinking we don't work/have a dead project and don't accept help anyway ;D).
Will see, he seemed a nice guy anyway :)

well, saves me talking to him :P i gave him some comments on it then he never said anything about it to me again after so how he can say i didn't contact him i don't know. from being in an irc channel with him for years, i very much doubt jerry will be a regular contributor - i'd definitely see this as a one-off, especially if that's how the dat came to being

cassiel,

can you fix Camputers Lynx - Demos :-

game (
   name "Pattern Box Demo (1984)(Camputers)"
   description "Pattern Box Demo (1984)(Camputers)"
rom ( name "Pattern Box Demo (#2 Page 7 (19xx)(-)"
   description "R. Penrose Lynx User #2 Page 7 (19xx)(-)"
   rom ( name "R. Penrose Lynx User #2 Page 7 (19xx)(-).tap" size 646 crc a1db7e86 md5 d98e73208a77bd3a2a8477a2c30fdb68 )
)

I'm presuming should be :-

game (
   name "Pattern Box Demo (1984)(Camputers)"
   description "Pattern Box Demo (1984)(Camputers)"
   rom ( name "Pattern Box Demo (1984)(Camputers).tap" size 1222 crc 0f8bde7e md5 0b9970bbecfbc887a4a2de79726dd965 )
)

As R. Penrose... is in the Magazines dat, but the dat also includes files that are in other split dats & the dat file itself also cuts off before the end at :-

game (
name "Star Rover Lynx User #1 (19xx)(-)"
description "Star Rover Lynx User #1 (19xx)(-)"
   rom (

<end of file>

Forgot to say, re XML.... think this an excellent idea for the physical DATs. Not even CMP uses the old DAT format any more, and you never know when Roman might pull the option from CMP's DIR2DAT all together, which would be a mild pain the ass for us.

Not a huge deal, but forward looking... and forward looking always good (even for a project obsessed with the past ;) )

Obviously a question (and decision) for [idoru] though…..

I said to panda months ago that the db should output XML dats, even though I can't stand the damn things - nowhere near as visually easy to manually edit as the old-style. I can't see Roman removing the ability to read them though he may remove the ability to create them, but there are many ways of creating CMP dats.

I'm still using TIM for generating DATs and for me it's alot easier and faster than doing it in clrmame.

Post by: PandMonium on October 16, 2009, 07:26:54 PM
Well i didn't make it yet because you guys all prefer to use a more 'readable' format, even if XML is readable (one of the goals for XML usage is that), anyway i pretend to implement it one day but didn't finished support for it in tosecdb or my tools because we have never used it before.

So, the idea is to support old/new cmp formats, one more with a lot more info and even a lot more options, it is just not ready yet and will be stopped until i have a bit more time again, for now i want to use my free time to plan changes and to small features i'm asked for (for example yesterday TKaos needed a way to search all dats with a given more info flag).

The 3 main disadvantages of XML dats (that i can see now) are:
a) Less readable for you guys
b) You also need to understand that there are forbidden chars in XML files, so they can't insert manually and html entities instead, one example is ', in an XML file it must be '.
c) Obviously the datfiles sizes will increase, even if marginally.

Ah, but that's where XML editors come in... ;)

TKoas - my thinking was exactly same as you, but once you start using CMP (and using time saving techniques like saving DAT creation profiles), it works out A LOT quicker.... just need to get used to it.

Camputer DATs on my USB key fucked AND 'Readme.txt' fucked.

Camputer DATs on FTP fucked and 'Readme.txt' is fine...

WHAT is going on..... so frustrating. Think I'm going to have to re-check/re-do these carefully. Looks like my USB stick might be corrupting files/random fuck ups!

maybe its time for you to get a new USB key or at least format that one and backup your data :P
this post is just to let you know that "Camputers Lynx - Demos (TOSEC-v2009-10-13_CM).dat" in your wip folder is broken, it ends up with:

Quote
game (
name "Star Rover Lynx User #1 (19xx)(-)"
description "Star Rover Lynx User #1 (19xx)(-)"
   rom (
it can be for many reasons, maybe you got it corrupted or the transfer ended earlier somehow, will check TKaos and Gruby wip dats and then current-wip folder.

Jerry also sent me this dat and i have the original dat that was done by no-intro as an april fools joke back in 2007. The dat is a good dat with publisher names as these were dragged off the now defunct no-intro database and are 100% correct. However no-intro at the time never kept the dates hence the dates were all put as 19xx.

Here is the body of the original message on their forum to mark the occasion. I knew keeping this as a txt file would come in handy one day ;)

Quote
No-Intro and TOSEC are proud to announce the World Domination Project: No-InTrOSEC

The best team from the console/handheld scene, No-Intro, and the best team from the computer/obscure systems scene, TOSEC, will officially merge and make the ultimate team to conquer the entire world.
For this we will adapt all dats to the TOSEC naming convention. To kick-off this historical event we proudly present today the first fully converted release:
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (No-InTrOSEC-v2007-04-01_CM)
Expect the other systems to follow shortly!! :)

If anyone wants the original dat give me a yell and i will forward it ;)

btw heres a little bit more of a twist, just read the entire txt file and stumbled over this ...hahahah

Since you talked about splitting various DATs in another thread I wanted to ask if you came across Dragon 32 & 64 yet.
In the [VDK] DAT are following files:
Blank Disk - 40 Track Double Sided (2003)(-)
Blank Disk - 40 Track Single Sided (2003)(-)
Blank Disk - 80 Track Double Sided (2003)(-)
Blank Disk - 80 Track Single Sided (2003)(-)

I don't really see a point for them to be in those DATs and also the (2003) looks strange to me, maybe you already removed them.

Before you delete those, are you really sure they should be deleted ? Is there any other way with Dragon emulation to create a blank disk image (like there is in WinUAE for Amiga) ? They can be useful if a program requires you to load a blank disk to use for saving settings/savegames etc.

I know ideally everyone would be using a real computer, but that's not gonna be possible at some point...

Yeah, and looks like they come from utility anyway rather than imaging a physical disk.... not the first time we've removed this sort of thing.

On this note, I understand where you coming from, but really don't think its appropriate to include 'emulator' files in the project anyway. Supposed to be cataloguing and preserving actual media, not getting involved in all that.

IMO a decent emu (and associated tools) should be able to generate blank disk images (of whatever types), empty RAM/save carts, blank HD images (for installing installable games etc), all that shit.... We should be concentrating on BIOS images, (actual) disk/disc images, ROM dumps, that sort of thing....

Where' I've noticed a problem in the above dats, I've corrected the TNC "main title - subtitle" issues as discussed in the TNC thread. I've made a folder with the fixed dats inside your renamers folder - hopefully I've not missed any out!

Big thanks... will have a quick check today.

Was looking at all the DATs I actively maintain last night and I've got fucking loads of ', The's in the subtitles.... will concentrate on correcting these over this weekend.... :-[

Cassiel, I have just renamed most of the dats for the Colecovision manuals. I have found that the last games dat i have the publishers names in a lot of cases are incorrect. Also there are at least 20 titles that should be split out into an educational dat to be consistent.

When the Colecovision was released in 1982 Coleco Industries purchased the license from many arcade companies to produce their games on the console. These were then programmed by Coleco's in house video game division. Therefore titles such as Donkey Kong should be named Donkey Kong (1982)(Coleco) instead of Donkey Kong (1982)(Nintendo) as Nintendo took no part in the Coleco port of the game.

Coleco also released many educational cartridges under the guise of "Coleco family learning series". An example of this is Cabbage Patch Kids Picture Show (1984)(OAA - Coleco). These are the titles that should be in an educational dat.

I will go through the dat soon and when completed send a copy to you so you can change the official dat.

OK.... a big pile of DATs to correct a number of the 'The' and 'A' issues (inc. non-English) as well as lots of Publisher corrections, a few name corrections, and some duplicates removed.

TKaos - I've corrected a couple of the incorrect German names when I was also correcting 'Die'/'Das' etc in Atari 2600. I know you were saying you were going to have a look at this so thought I should warn you that I haven't done it, was just two or three files I changed I think.

quick comment in passing then i'm off out the door again :P

Acorn Electron - Games - [UEF]
"Rising of Salandra, The Part 1 - The Prophecy (1984)(Larsoft Adventures)"

needs a fix, presume it's just "Rising of Salandra, The - Part 1 - The Prophecy", but not got time to check atm

Atari 2600 & VCS - Games
     Anglen (198x)(Ariola)(PAL)(DE)[!][aka Fishing Derby]
Angriff der Luftflotten (198x)(Quelle)(PAL)(DE)[!][aka Paris Attack]
Aufruhr im Zoo (19xx)(Starsoft)(PAL)(DE)[!][aka Zoo Fun]

I noticed the [aka xxx] were removed on those 3 files, but not on any others in the dat - should they have been or should they have stayed?

The rest of the dats have been moved over into the main folder.

I can't really give you an answer about that [aka] thing, it somehow looks like we don't need it but on the other hand could be usefull information for people not speaking german since it seems to say [it's the german version of game x].

RE Electron:
Good spot, my error. Will correct and reupload, but just need to check if 'Rising of Salandra, The - Part 1 - The Prophecy (1984)(Larsoft Adventures)' appropriate or 'Rising of Salandra Part 1, The - The Prophecy (1984)(Larsoft Adventures)' better.

RE 2600
Yes, MOST of other aka should be removed but... I got bored ;) Seriously though, I spotted those first three and changed them, but then realised there was like a 100+ more. They're not wrong per se, just 99% of them irrelevant and/or misleading. I've added them to my TOSEC todo list (under "nice to fix") but at the moment there's a thousand other things I'd rather review and correct (must prioritise!).

well i don't know if they are that bad to be a priority / need to remove atm really :P
the atari2600 is much worst in some other aspects like missing all sets after letter H or something, it seems the renamer got away after doing 1/3 of it :P

Well all the [aka] are there for a reason, just like like [doujin] once were in the Sharp DATs so I don't really agree to just remove all of them because it's fast to "fix".

Sure I just mean, think pro/con about it, for example if a german release got a german title it's not really bad to know the english title too by the filename and some other files I saw use english title and have [aka] with a different english title which is less necessary in my opinion.

I agree Tkaos, having an [aka] on the equivalent non-english releases is an excellent idea and should be left as is. It allows people that only speak english an opportunity to understand more about the background of the game and what it is similar to. It is also important if a person in the future uses TOSEC as a platform to document all the varients of a certain game. With the [aka] flag this will be able to be accomplished easily.

Following question:
Winter Olympiad 88 (1988)(Tynesoft)(GB)(Disk 1 of 2 Side A).atr
Winter Challenge (1988)(Thunder Mountain)(US)(Disk 1 of 2 Side A).atr

Do you think in such cases there should be a more info because it's the same game, just released under different names.

Also why it's not "Dragon 32 & 64" or "Dragon 32 & Dragon 64" anymore?
There is as far as I know no "Dragon" computer.

emu crap = blank floppy's etc - u actually highlighted as well!

Dragon, like Amiga.... rather than: Dragon 32 & Dragon 64 & Dragon 128 & Dragon Professional & TANO Dragon 64

Not perfect, but better than prev + already used convention in other DATs.

I will not be reviewing/fixing any more of the older or orphaned DATs (in the immediate future anyway).

Will be concentrating on the DATs I actively maintain (posted here for reference: http://www.tosecdev.org/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=13&jfile=index.php&topic=53.new).

The only DATs/system that I've made significant progress with (but not submitted) is 'Casio CFX'. If anyone has any interest I can share what I've done so far.

Nice work. :)

Question:
Why do you use (JP)(ja), (KR)(ko) or (US)(en) ?
When it is (JP) then the normal language from these releases is (ja), so no need to write it and expand the setname.

(ja) isn't necessarily the 'normal' language of a (JP) release.... in fact that's true for all regionally released software.

Unfortunately, its not always as simple as (JP) obviously = (ja), (DE) obviously = (de) etc....

See SNK Neo-Geo DATs for some good examples, or the below updated Nintendo GB/GBC DATs as well.....

What I mean is if you use (JP) then it's not needed to use (ja) too, only if the language is a different than japanese then use a language flag since common sense is (JP) = (ja).

For example there are alot Atari 8bit games with (DE) flag, yet I don't need to change them to (DE)(de) because I only need to put a language flag if the german release is in a different language, such as (DE)(en) or (DE)(fr).

Oh, I see....

But the problem is how would you know if it really is (JP)=(ja) or is it just that that info (language) isn't in the DAT - like 90% of the DATs.

Always best to use known/absolute values (from a database perspective)...

The renamer who put the country code (JP) should just write a language flag to the setname if it's different than (ja) and that's also what I asked idoru a while ago and we discussed to make a TNC check for that to spot errors with duplicate info.

I guys :D
don't overreact about all that :S
I've never renamed anything but know the tnc rules and from what i recall from seeing TKaos and idoru discussing it, it was agreed that, like using always country codes if possible is good, also using country + language codes isn't when the language is the same as the country of origin, what i mean is that when a set is from PT, language flag should only be used if it was different from the one used in the country (pt).
This seems logically to avoid having long file names and unneeded work in most of sets like (US)(en) , (DE)(de) , (FR)(fr) and so on so i guess we should keep following, i don't mind having extra info in sets but only think it's not needed so you're having extra work :P

In some cases it is not that clear but having the language missing might even help out, for example Greek = el, Greece = GR: (GR) would give the right idea, (GR)(el) could generate more confusion, there are also countries where more than one language is spoken and in those cases language flag could be used i guess. Having all information we can is great for a DB but also having it all in the filename is not that great idea, ideally we would have more info in a db (or xml datfile for example) and only essential tnc info on the filenames, for example when a set is M4 or 5 i will never know by the filename which languages are there :P

I also talked with idoru about (CA) ~ Canada, he told me to only use language flag for it if it's (CA)(fr) (and other languages ofc) and if it's english just stay with (CA).

Sega Super Control Station - Games (TOSEC-v2009-12-10_CM)
this one is missing from the FTP afaik, i can only find:
"Sega Super Control Station - Games (TOSEC-v2009-11-26_CM).dat" there :)

btw, the update process is difficult and boring, adding / removing the newer dats manually to a common folder where the older ones are (i'm doing this only here at my computer, in the ftp that is done by idoru), we should have some sort of system to help us out in that, something to go to my todo list i guess :P

EDIT: ERROR - unknown renamer: Cassiel - C0llector (DAT: Sega Visual Memory Unit - Applications)
there is an error in this datfile header, a tab instead of an empty space after your name :P

First of all, it's nice you removed the (JP)(ja) etc. but on the other hand you added (en) flags to "Nintendo 64 - Applications" (and other dats) where it's not needed because our main language is (en) we're only adding language code if it's different than (en) or adding (en) when the country is not an english speaking one.

I'm not sure wether it's good or not to add a language code even if it's english.

Nintendo 64 (and most of others in the list) are systems released internationally and have international languages used.

I was under the impression from the TNC that it was only if a system had a “standard” language that it was to be omitted (from memory anyway). None of these have a “standard” language.

If you want (en) is to be omitted as a matter of course (unless essential presumably, e.g. (en-ja)), then I will update them….

Well if a setname got no language nor country flag then it's (en), that's why we don't use it in the names and as I said I used it in the Galaksija DATs and had to drop it.
I hope Pandmonium got some time soon to fix all that in the TNC.pdf.

Well a set/image can still be language neutral (no language) if theres no english (or french or jap etc) text. Thats why some of them in my DATs (en) and some of them nothing.

Will try and change tonight anyway (as long as I have time).

PandMonium - you might want to add (en) to the parser then (to flag up as an error) since it will never be used on its own.....

Hi guys, nice to see you discussing that and getting somewhere :P
So i should disallow usage of (en) in which circumstances? Not that i will do it right now but i'm just asking to see if it is possible or would need some extra work.
The rules are something like:
*) If no language code assume the language is english
*) If country code is present and no language code, it means the language is what? a) country official language b) english
*) Country code and language code present don't need explanation, but using country and language from that country isn't needed because it is undeeded extra info? (e.g. (JP)(ja) / (PT)(pt) / (DE)(de), etc?
*) If only language flag is present, it can never be (en) because english is the "default" language and using it is unneeded (so it is something between an error and extra unneeded info)

See, TNC is always complicated even with the small easy flags but that is the way i would like to have all rules explained, it works a bit like the parser, having a set of rules and following some sort of cascade from flag to flag until entire setname is parsed and then the parsed flags checked :P

Yep rules are:
- If no language code assume the language is english
- If country code is present and no language code, it means the language is country official language
- Country code and language code present don't need explanation, but using country and language from that country isn't needed because it is undeeded extra info. (e.g. (JP)(ja) / (PT)(pt) / (DE)(de), etc.
- If only language flag is present, it can never be (en) because english is the "default" language and using it is unneeded

Grrrrrr..... just realised I've fucked up some of these DATs regarding the (en) flag (thats what I get for rushing).

I can't access the FTP from where I am, can someone please copy these DATs:
http://www.redsplinter.com/tosec/Cassiel%20DATs%2020091224.zip
and use them to replace the ones on the TOSEC FTP (7 new DATs replacing last nights corressponding 7 DATs).

I doubt I'll get a chance later tonight.....
