What about Box and Media scans?
« on: July 11, 2014, 10:34:02 PM »
For the last couple of years I've been doing a lot of scanning. Scanning all material that has a physical surface.
This being primarily C64 and Amiga.

What I'd like to see in TOSEC in addition to what is already there, are
Box scans front and back. (scans of the side might be up for discussion)
Scans of the media (full disk or label, CD, tape).

This will be a good oppertunity to keep track of scanned material for that kind too.

what are your thoughts on this?

I take that as a big yes  :)

Sorry I was only looking at Commodore related computers, and saw none.

is it possible to get 2-3 samples to see how they look like and compare against some of my C64/Amiga boxes.
IBM - Buck Rogers Countdown to doomsday
IBM - Dragon Wars
Amstrad - Navy Seals

(I can provide pics for proof of ownership if required)

Are there any rules?
tbh I don't like the PDF format for box/disk scans as you'll never know how badly the quality will be if one isn't not careful.

Of course it's a big yes! I like scans and TOSEC PIX can accomodate them just fine.
Not much fond of .pdf either, but it was adopted as a standard when PIX started. Aral and idoru were the main culprits for this, so perhaps Aral can explain the exact reasons it was used in the first place.

 O0

I love scans myself hence my work with'em ;-)

PDF is a nice container for multiple scans like manuals etc. which is probably why it was chosen to begin with.

On a second thought, it would be nice if people gets credit for their work if wanted. This could come out of adding [name] to the file naming.

I wonder if Aral is on vacation. I haven't heard from him in a while now. I'm awaiting some answers from the ISO forum.

If there are no objections, I'd like to adopt (and be maintainer) for
PIX - Commodore - Games/Apps (this might be a large mouthful -but hey- I gotta try  O0)

No objection from me, sounds like you are qualified for taking this up.
As long as Aral is willing to give it up, since PIX is his "baby". But a little spread of workload probably would n't hurt at all...IMHO always.  :)

It's a lot of work, but I'm also fine with just contributing, letting Aral do the rest.

For me it's a common goal, and not a competition to get all this stuff added, as long as there are someone to do it :-)

i could contribute cover-scans for the VIC20......(i first have to ask the owners (scanners), of course
So, what format do you prefer ? - PNG - JPG - etc
and size ? X x 900
What TOSEC-Name ?

example :
Commodore VIC20/Artwork/Games/Inlay/Front/3-Deep Space (1983)(Postern)[name scanner].png
=> PNG [Compressionslevel 9 rezised with gimp] = 1392 x 900  = 2,84 MB

any suggestions ?

In my opinion it should be
600dpi png.

resize should be forbidden.

for preservation the scans should be delivered as non cropped... leaving a small border around the subject.
for illustration the scans can be improved.. if you don't know how to do so I can do it.

here are some links to read, there are meant as guidelines

you're welcome :-)

For confirmation and validation, tosec would need the scans too.. I can set up an FTP account for you which Aral has access to.
I don't know if there are any official FTP sites..

Will you be uploading the un modified / uncropped images to SPS too?

thanks for reply & links, tomse.
I'll give it a try , soon ;-)

just one question :
the cover-inlay-scans is complete. (meaning : front, spine & back)
do TOSEC-PIX need to have them seperatly ? - i would leave them complete, because the "back-inlay" is most some text/copyright info. (Tape-Inlay's)

btw. in 600dpi a inlay-scan will have about 20 - 40 MB each picture.....

And how imo it should look like after a little editing ;-) (not for preservation but for TOSEC)

sorry for my ignorance.....what means SPS  :-[

and, as i said before : I do first need the permission from the scanners for sharing their work with TOSEC....
It could be , they don't want to share the high resolutions (600dpi) with the hole world, now.
So, let's hope the best....
