Hundreads of UK game mags - any scanners around?
« on: April 10, 2013, 01:36:15 PM »
Hi,

I own many hundreds of games magazines including Edge and TOTAL! magazine. I also have a large collection of official nintendo, GamesMaster, and some other Future Publishing titles.

Is there anyone living in the South west of England who would be interested in scanning them and adding them to TOSEC-PIX? I would be happy for the scanner to keep the mags as well, for free.

If anyone is seriously interested please get in touch. Here or via PM. If serious offers appear I will upload photos and do some proper cataloguing.

Thanks.

I would LOVE to take you up on that generous offer, if only I had the time to commit...

Come on fellow Brits... don't leave the man hanging! Who's gonna step up?   :)

Midget35 i would love to be able to have the opportunity to scan these however i am a few thousand miles away from you....  I am willing to pay postage to get the mags i am missing so they can be scanned into PIX regardless of the cost.  Please PM me when you get a chance :)

That's great Aral! Given the huge distance between both i suppose postage will be a bit expensive, no? If needed i think we can try to collect a few small donations around here to help in that (at least i can give a few euros). :)

Save the postage costs and buy an inexpensive scanner with ADF (automatic document feeder).

Just out of curiosity, how well does that stuff works (ADF)? I guess the sheets have to be separated, right? Is there something that opens the magazines and turns the pages? :D

ADF's CAN be very good, but yes generally I believable off-the-shelf units can only handle single sheets at a time (of various volumes depending on model obliviously). This certainly seems to be the case with any I've used/seen. Believe Google (Books) had to develop a whole system of their own to achieve the same (?).

Meh... I know a couple of Elbonian's that could knock it out for a few rupee.   ;)

That seems pretty fast, "my" traditional scanner is really slow and noisy to scan a single page (and often ends up slightly tilted to one of the sides).

Looks good, certainly faster than what I've used (which tend to jam the second you turn away from the bastards too).

Same problem though right, you can only scan a single sheets at a time. How do you scan mags? Unbind them first?

Yeah, i guess cutting the book / magazine in single sheets is the usual way to do it, like here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP4NbFaYZVI

Still it makes the book unusable and is not acceptable in rare documents. There is a story somewhere describing the technique used by google books, additionally there are machines like this which probably cost an insane amount of money :D

Is it possible to assemble them again afterwards?
