TNC updated (2011-08-27)
« on: September 04, 2011, 09:29:12 AM »
Hello everyone out there,

Just a short note to let you know Tosec Naming Convention has been updated recently (2011-08-27) in case you hadn't realized. Some relevant pieces of information have been updated so it is worth a reading. I was browsing the webiste and found about it when checking the Downloads section. If it had been unnoticed to me it might have happened the same to others. Maybe a post in the website might give it more visibility? Just a suggestion. By the way, great work with the update!

PS. How did you draw that cool looking header and footer line in W2007-2010?

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...................    ;)

PandMonium and I have been having trouble updating the HTML version (friggin' Word/Joomla) which is why I haven't posted the news yet. As you've noticed, the PDF version is working OK though.

Once the browse-able HTML version is working 100% (which should be shortly) I'll publicize the changes properly   ;D

Well.... the HTML version is working well enough for now, though a more manageable solution would be better. That might have to be after a website software upgrade though!

Anyway.... onto the TNC news.

Revision 3 (27/08/2011) changes:
- Introduction rewritten to be consistent with TOSEC website and Wiki page.
- Forbidden Characters section revised.
- References to "ZZZ-UNK-" rewritten to make it clear 'unknowns' should always be avoided (as well as a return to the more strict convention of "ZZZ-UNK-" rather than "ZZZ-UNK").
- Expanded examples in Version section.
- Expanded and gave proper descriptions to possible flags in Demo section.
- Year renamed to Date to better reflect the flag usage.
- Examples expanded in Date section, including making it clear '2000-01-0x' is an acceptable date.
- Added proper descriptions to Development Status Flag possibilities.
- Added proper descriptions to Media Type Flag possibilities.
- Dump Flags section greatly expanded to more accurately describe the purpose of each flag, as well as adding more examples and clarifications.
- Current Issues appendix moved to separate document since inappropriate to include in a published spec.
- Lots of general cleaning up and improvements to general language, punctuation and grammar.

So this brings the question, is 0x and 1x also allowed as month? ;)

The problem is just that the renamer have to be sure and not just assuming that it's 0x, else we end up with DATs full of those dates. :P

Oh definitely... as I mentioned in TNC as an example, it would be useful for things like Mags where you know it was release within Q1 only not the exact month say.

I guess its like any flag.... it still depends on renamers using it appropriately and actually their engaging brains!
