(System) Flag
« on: June 22, 2010, 01:22:09 PM »
It's going to be about TI again :-) Here is the problem: I have a few sets containing a software for two versions of TI-83: TI-83 and TI-83+. I don't want to split sets because that's the way it was released and because of the included documentation that mention about multiple system support. So how can I use the System flag or rather how to separate systems?

(TI-83-TI-83+) or (TI-83 - TI-83+)?

The TNC documentation is not very clear about that.

It's still (TI-83-TI-83+) but might be changed some time since it's a bit confusing.

TKaos is right, system flags with various systems are split with "-", an obvious problem is when "-" is also present in the name but we haven't discussed the problem and possible solutions yet.

Also, to all renamers, if a new system flag is needed/used, please let me know so i can take note of that so it appears here for example. :P

Thanks for the answer! PandMonium here are the system flags I'm going to use if needed:

  • TI-73
  • TI-80
  • TI-81
  • TI-82
  • TI-83
  • TI-83+
  • TI-84
  • TI-84+
  • TI-85
  • TI-86
  • TI-89
  • TI-92
  • TI-92+
  • TI-Nspire
  • TI-Voyage 200

That would be all for now...

That's a lot! :P
And what about combinations? I need them too due the the problems refeered above (only the ones you want to use really), like the "TI-83-TI-83+" example you gave.

I can't tell you all the combinations right now. It depends on what I find inside a set. But the most common so far is "TI-83-TI-83+", "TI-84-TI-84+" and unfortunately all of them together from TI-73 to TI-92+ when a developer or a publisher decided to put version of their software for all the platforms in one distribution pack. Maybe we have to think about some sort of short description instead of using (TI-73-TI-81-TI-82-TI-83-TI-83+-TI-85-TI-86-TI-86-TI-89-TI-92-TI-92+)

Is that possible?? It looks really ugly :(
Maybe split some of them in different dats according to the system(s) or don't use it in case it works in every system? Don't know what to suggest but it really looks weird :P

I can't leave it empty if there's a file for every system because it is empty if there's version only for one :-) How about something like: All-TI? Splitting is not an option.

Anything to me will look better than a massive system flag like that :P
Code: [Select]
Title (19xx)(Publisher)(TI-73-TI-81-TI-82-TI-83-TI-83+-TI-85-TI-86-TI-86-TI-89-TI-92-TI-92+)
Anyway even if there was something to represent all TI systems, taking one of them out would be a problem again, that's why i asked if that is possible (a set that may work across so many different systems/models) and if you or anyone doesn't have any great suggestions to this problem.

My first idea was to have different dats like what happens currently (but with some dats for more than on system if they are really "compatible"):
Texas Instruments TI-73 - Something
Texas Instruments TI-81 - blabla
Texas Instruments TI-82 & TI-83 & TI-83+ - blabla

Isn't this really doable? It really is strange to group so many systems in one datfile so that system flag would be needed, other opinions are welcome :P

Well... It is not such a big problem since I have maybe 10 sets like that so far. The most common compilation is (TI-83-TI-83+) which is definitely acceptable. So far I found only one publisher releasing software for all the TI calculators in on set and that person always puts all the version into one set or just one. Since it's just a few sets lets wait a little and see what will I find later.

It's not quite as neat as having a system flag, but for those few sets could you not use the [more info] field ?  Something along the lines of :-

Blah (19xx)(Company)[compatible TI-73 - 92+]

I need to use the [more info] flag very often. Many times TI software require an extra shell to run so I use it to name the shell or to inform about extra files (e.g. sources) included. Luckily non of the sets with long system flag need the more info flag :) but this is not a solution. I guess I'll try to split this stuff if it will be possible. I'll let you know later.

Well, [more info] in these limited cases is infinitely more preferrable than a system flag of (TI-73-TI-81-TI-82-TI-83-TI-83+-TI-85-TI-86-TI-86-TI-89-TI-92-TI-92+) :P  I didn't say it was perfect, but there'll never be a renaming system perfect for everything ;)

Since we can have more that one [more info] flag I think I'll follow your suggestion. [compatible TI-73 - 92+] looks good to me.

On the other hand, why do we have a system flag if you don't use it?
In my opinion it's not really nice to use more info for that, since "[compatible TI-73 - 92+]" is always bigger than (TI-73-TI-92+), you could even leave the 2 "-" out and make it (TI73-TI92+) to shorten it.
