Hi everbody.

I am new there but a fan of TOSEC for months, I was surprised by the TOSEC from the first time I hear about it.

However, I am confused when I notice that it seems there is another site called "The Old School Emulation Center v2.0".

Someone claimed his datfiles was got from "www.tosec-iso.org", but I found that their naming convention is different from the "Tosec Naming Convention (2011-08-27)".

e.g.
there is a game called "Bakumatsu Roman Daini Maku - Gekka no Kenshi - Tsuki ni Saku Hana, Chiri Yuku Hana (1999)(SNK)(JP)[!][Last Blade 2, The]" in the datfile "SNK Neo-Geo CD - Games (TOSEC-v2011-02-26_CM)"
is called "Bakumatsu Roman Daini Maku - Gekka no Kenshi  ~Tsuki ni Saku Hana, Chiri Yuku Hana~ (JP) [NGCD-2430] [496-4808-50108-3]" in the datfile "SNK Neo-Geo CD - Games (JP) (TOSEC-v2012-05-25_XML)".

The site "www.tosec-iso.org" seems create on 2012 July. Anyone knows about it? It is a phishing site or a sister site?

Hi endah,

Sorry for just replying now, although it is a bit more complex i will explain it briefly:

The TOSEC project appeared +- 14 years ago as a rom cataloging project with the goal of helping to identify / sort these files and name it according to a convention (TNC - Tosec Naming Convention) - so, it started as a renaming project.

AFAIK, somewhere between 2006 or 2007 (my guess) a dumping project started named toseciso. The goal was to dump only original optical media and catalog it (in part to avoid what happened previously with other media types - lots of formats and bad dumps). The process of dumping isos has always been an open debate with other projects claiming "the right method" and so on.

During the last years the whole project slowed down with the disappearing of many key members. Nowadays, the TOSEC renaming project continues to work at this location. The old dumping project site went offline (toseciso.org). Meanwhile a few members of it were working on a new dumping tool / method (aka trurip) and lately they started releasing dumps. Although there is not many documentation about the method, it is claimed to be "the correct one" and members started redumping collections with it (except Maddog, the DC dumper). They also started using the tosec-iso.org domain.

That's it! I tried to explain it the better, non bias i could. Basically the renaming project is hosted here, the old dumping project is dead and some of their members with are now dumping / redumping with the new tool. They also dat their isos but i'm not sure the TNC convention is being followed. Here in the downloads section our last release still contains the toseciso dats with the older method.

As for the TOSEC 2.0, that notation started at the end of 2003 with the release of the renewed site and system to generate that and all that at the older site (tosec.info), you can still read that explanation in the site FAQ (a copy of that is available in wayback machine / internet archive).

A few corrections:

1. 2004 / 2005 under the name CD Dumping Project (aka toseciso.org).
2. The debate is still going on, while I only have to mention there isn't a "perfect" way since to begin with the cd's aint "perfect" themselves to begin with. But thats another discussion.
3. Only 1 member disappeared namely idoru. The both of us were already working on new dumps and website.
4. Ripping tool is / was done by Truong and me, no other members were involved (besides test ripping, like idoru for example).
5. We don't claim its the correct one (see also point 2). Its 2352 mode + offset correction + subs + clonecd / cue sheet format + unscrambled and some other stuff.
6. Wrong. Maddog start soon ripping.
7. Not some of the or members are dumping, all heavy dumpers / collectors are dumping (again), esp. since Maddog starts soon and Aral is dumping already now). Of the top dumpers then only idoru isn't around from the old "crew".

Hi Ripper006,
nice to see you around.

Thanks for clearing all the points but take it easy as I was not criticizing or trying to make any part look good or bad, just gave my opinion.

E.g.:
There is no point in saying that i was "wrong" and then end up confirming what i said (If you say Maddog *will start*, it means he has not started yet, and there is not a big deal about it).
I also was talking generally about the TOSEC project and the disappearance of several members over the years since I've been around, namely the 2 that started it (Grendel and idoru), not the iso part specifically since i don't know much about it (it was really hard to know).

IMHO many things were really not well managed and created a series of problems. There was always a lack of openness and discussion/communication in all branches since i can remember. All this secrecy was always unjustified and doesn't really help / helped in anything, anyway i see you guys started outputting more info in this last year which is great.

Again, thanks for the corrections and take it easy :P

Np. Thx. No offense taken.

Maddog is waiting for drive to arrive, then he can start also.

Grendel started it at 1997 / 1998 (roms mainly).

idoru came later on the project and doing only cd dumping (together with Duke), based back then on EAC ripping (with drive offset etc.).
