Would like to contribute my IBM Diskimages

Hi there,

I followed the new activity here at TOSEC concerning IBM Disk-Images with quite big interest. I would call myself a DOS fanatic, I collect these old games for quite a while now and for preserving purposes I also made images from them (using WinImage). I always are on the hunt for other diskimages and so I naturally have the TOSEC set. And to give something back I would like to contribute my own dumped diskimages to you. It would be about 100 games, more or less, some of them you already have, but most of them would be new. As I am from Germany there will be many german versions of the games.

But before I have some questions:

- Where should I upload my images? Can I use your FTP?
- about the renaming:is anywhere documented what for values are possible for the switch "snd"? I saw this on the older images, but don't really get what they all mean
- and last question: I have some images where I am sure that it is no perfect dump, because I changed dates from files or changed the bootsector by myself, because these were not in original state anymore, should I upload them too?

If you want I can list all games before.

hello dosjunkie, thanks for contributing to our project.  The best way is to zip all the files into one big archive and upload to http://www.sharebee.com and PM me the address it gives you.  Dont worry about the [s ] or [v] when renaming as these are not being used in the newest dat unless there is a unique reason for a image to have them.  When they are uploaded i will scan through them and add them to the next dat.

I can also provide you a place if you need. You should talk with Aral and other contributors about the dumping method to avoid adding bad dumps.

Hi, I also have a Rapidshare Premium Acc., I could upload it to this. But on FTP would also be fine with me, what you prefer. I was busy today renaming all my images to fit your naming convention. Just finished with this, so I will upload all my stuff tomorrow. I will then write in the topic what I all have uploaded with SHA-1 checksums, release information and all that. At some dumps I will also write, what I made with the image.

To your information, here is how I dump my images. I use WinImage, I think it is something like version 3.x. It is the 16bit version under native Windows 3.11. I found out, that the never version like to change the bootsector information, so this old program works best without having anything altered. After dumping I checked the images for the bootsector information, if it could be original. For example "DOS 5.0", "IBM 3.3", aso. If the bootsector is changed, for example by Windows 95 or later, there are some ASCII codes in it, I think 4 with following the letters IHC. Then I know that it is not original anymore. If I have information about the original bootsector I have changed it back. If not, I don't use these images. After checking that, I checked the dates of the files. At some images, mostly old Sierra games (for example the file: resource.cfg), files are changed or files are written on the disk which don't are there in original state. I also tried to reverse that. At last I compared the checksums of my images with existing images.

But with something I need help. I have some games which seem to have a disk copy protection. I dumped them without problems, no read errors or something. But when I want to install from these images, the game recognizes, that it is not the original disk! I tried to dump with Anadisk, but I don't really have a clue about that program. Anyone knows in which format it saves the images? Seems not to be normal .ima/.img format...

Please, if you have the game boxes it would be a great idea to annotate in a txt the barcodes, reference numbers, distributors, disk floppy label info, etc. Anything that could be used to recognice a game or program between different releases. This is because, many times, a game is released in the market, and then it is re-released cheaper using another type of package. In this cases, the content of the media (floppy, CD, etc) can be updated or be different. In the future, in order to be able to catalog all this dumps better that info would be very apreciated.

I'm doing that with my games.
I'm also scanning the boxes, floppies and manuals in 600 dpi.

I dump my floppies in Linux using the "dd" command, for example: dd if=/dev/fd0 of=some_image.ima
In Windows I use RawWrite (http://www.chrysocome.net/rawwrite).

I have no floppy with antycopy protection so I don't know how to copy them but maybe TeleDisk (from the same authors of Anadisk) could help.
I think Aral know how to copy them.

I really underestimated the work I had to do before I finally could upload my images. It took far more time. But here finally the 1st part of my contribution. At first I uploaded all the 3,5" disk-images which had no problem at all. So I think they are all perfect dumps.

And attached the complete list with all the images in the archive. I wrote down all games with all information I have. I also wrote down the barcode (EAN / UPC) when I have it for bluearrow and after SHA-1 checksum there I wrote down the disk-label (when there is one  )

BTW (for all really) you can also 'attach' text files in this forum, so lots of disk info like this (that's goes on for pages) can simply be attached in a dump info.txt file -  might be easier.

I now modified my posts, so that all the information about the images is now in an attached txt-file. Thanks for pointing that out Cassiel, didn't think of that. But that really helps to keep the topic clear and understandable.

Seems I uploaded the 5,25" images too fast. I wanted to sort out some games before, missed that. vicvan, you found it out directly...   There are some images in the RAR archive that are not perfect dumps.

So Aral, please just use the images which I wrote down in the attached text-file, the others need some explanation...

For example Civilization. You're right vicvan, I had to modify the 1. disk. One file "installe.bat" was modified, so I copied the same file from disk 2 with the right date onto disk 1. With this naturally the SHA-1 checksum differs from a perfect dump. The bootsector wasn't modified by the way.

Later I wanted to ask if I should upload such modified images too. They could then be labeled "bad dump" or so. For them a redump would be necessary. This is only for Civilization and Space Quest III, for this I had to remove the resource.cfg from disk 1, all other disks are good.

Now to Die Hard. Yes I also saw in one of your posts vicvan, that you uploaded that too. I also saw, that the checksum differs from mine. Can you check why? The same is for Larry 2 and 3, on both games the checksum from you for disk 1 differs from mine. And for both Larry game I'm sure it is a perfect dump. There was no modification on my disks.

To finish the 5,25" disk images, I can confirm on some images from you that they are perfect dumps, because I have the same checksum. That are Populous, Populous - The promised Lands and Police Quest 1.

now I uploaded all my images which had some problems with dumping and I had to modify them. So I would call them "bad dumps" and a redump would be needed. But you can decide if these images make it into the new dat or not.

And here my description how I changed the images:

Civilization: as said before I had to copy one file from 2. disk to 1st disk because of wrong filedate
Doom v1.666: disk 2+3 had read errors, replaced files inside the images with same files with same size and date from the web, disk 1+4 are good
Lands of Lore: 5. disk had read errors, replaced file inside the image with file with same date and size from another image from web, other disks are good
Monkey Island 2: all disks had modified bootsectors from Win 95 or later, changed bootsector with bootsector from images of the english version, because had no german disks to compare
Metaltech Earthsiege Expansion: 1. disk had modified bootsector from Win 95 or later, changed in bootsector from 2.+3. disk, which were good
Space Quest III: also as said before, deleted file "resource.cfg" on 1st disk, other disks are good
The incredible Machine: game was installed on disk with german language, deleted all installed files
The incredible Machine 2: 3 files had wrong filedate on disk 1, changed it to date of all other files, also had modified bootsector, changed it back to bootsector from 2. disk, which was good

Next time I will upload my images of games already in the TOSEC dat or dumped by others, but where I have a different version or different checksum.
