Noob question on IBM PC disk image formats
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:48:24 AM »
Hey there! You did great work on the IBM PC lately, I think this is a major step forward in PC disk preservation. I have a question about the different and new image formats, what are they exactly? Information on .img and .ima is available throughout the net, here in the forum I read that .td0 comes from a tool called teledisk and .cp2 from Snatchdisk, both of them real dos tools which can be used to dump copy protected disks with the original early pc hardware, right? Can you actually write those back or use them in any emulation software? I read that you have to use a PCE and I think that means PC Emulator but can you tell which one? Obviously not Dosbox. And what are .pdi and .dsk? My guess is that .dsk stands for some kind of raw image like in other sets...?

It took me 1 day to figure this out now. PDI files are a format that has been used in 2006 and never established itself (seems to be a very slightly compressed image anyway based on WinImage(?))
The website for the tool to write the images back to floppy is only available through archive.org cached site here: http://web.archive.org/web/20060202041129/http://pcpp.retro-net.de/index.php?section=files where you can also download the utility "PDIwrite v0.5 for Windows"
Just in case i have mirrored the file also here: http://localhostr.com/files/BQpkcq3/PDIwrite05.exe

Thanks, I never thought this actually could be anwered somehow :) BTW I figured out that you can at least use .dsk like the .img in the [Boot] category, they seem to be all self booting disks from the good old 80s. You can mount them as boot images in dosbox and then boot directly into.
Edit: Plus I think you can actually read and write those .img and .dsk with Rawwrite: http://http://www.chrysocome.net/rawwrite
