#DiskDumpingDecember, where to keep the files

Hello,

We would like to organise a #DiskDumpingDecember event. This is to stimulate people to dump their old/retro disks to a digital format for preservation reasons.

First of all we like to focus on C64 and Amiga related software. As far as i know the C64 floppies we can use PreserveC64DB (http://csdb.dk/release/?id=118589) for the searching through the virtual media bulk.

Is there something similar for the Amiga .ADF files?

Does TOSEC facilitate in a mechanism to store the files/disks which are not added to the TOSEC vault?

Hi Berry,

We currently don't have such a system in place. However and depending on what is needed, I may try to help out. Still, my first suggestion regarding ADF and Amiga in general is to contact some of our members which maintain it (mai, crashdisk for instance). You can contact them directly at EAB TOSEC subforum. A lot of people with vast knowledge in Amiga hangs there.

I take it that the one of the goals of this event is to have the disks added to TOSEC.
If needed, I can create an FTP, and an install of PreservC64 so you can just upload the files to here.

This will be an ad-hoc setup where the C64 TOSEC guys will have access to download the d64 files.

The question would be.. how many users will upload, do we trust them not to overwrite existing folders
and thereby files? (individual ftp users vs. one user for all?)

A dumping event usually results in a large amount of files. Who will sort out, name and test the files?

Are the disks ok'ed to be layed out public (no personal messages etc), well afaik you're one of the c64 dumpers who's been doing it for quite some time so you know how to handle the data ;-)

do you have a site where we can see some info regarding the event?

Thanks for your replies.

We’ve got a (yet content-less) website up and did a little write-up of our plans.

Before we blow this up, like Berry said, we can use some ideas on the actual process of archiving. The dumping itself should not be that much of a problem but we need to think about the dupe-checking and actual storage. We don’t want to see people dumping all their disks to images only to find out that 99% already has been imaged. :-)

Also, we like to focus primarily on demoscene material; we ultimately hope to find still unknown/unarchived demos, music, packdisks and the like but we are open to suggestions. To be honest I will have to dig in TOSEC some more to really get to know what you like to be archived.

I can help sorting the disks and adding them to tosec, I've got specialised software to do so. It's a bit like 'spunk' (http://csdb.dk/release/?id=118589) but then on steroids.

I'm certainly helping out dumping disks, its such a waste to see them all going to the actual dump (like happening in Maarssen...)

Although we were not able to find the time to do a proper launch before December 1st, we did begin dumping (I already did 400 disks myself.). \o/ I hope to get the site up before the holidays start and give it some attention. As a result of the delay this project will certainly not end with the new year. It is going to be a long December. :-)

I am very interested in the software you mentioned and/or your help adding them to TOSEC. That is what we lack for Amiga at the moment.
