Proposed NES dat modifications
« on: March 03, 2010, 03:04:44 PM »
Heyos, I've started the arduous task of sorting roms by game, US region bias for later merging (expecting >90% reduction in storage size).  While doing so, I guess I should suggest any changes I feel need to be made, to whoever's still driving this bus.  I'm more of a nitpicker than an auditor, so bear with me. ;D  My posts may be few inbetween, but I really want to keep plucking away at this until it's done, just to say it's been done.  I have finished clrmamepro merge dats (US bias naming only) for SNES-Games, N64-Games and Genesis-Games already, saving a considerable amount of disk space (20-25 GB vs uncompressed).

Hi Zandro,

Like i said to you i'm not sure if Cassiel or other still maintain those dats but hope someone can fix that. I really like the notes you gave and i know it also happens in other systems (and worst). For example in C64 between dats for different file formats there are several versions of the same title or other values, that's why one of my/our goals is to get it sorted out via lists of "valid values".
Can't tell you much more now cause my desktop is shut down but maybe later i can give you some more examples or useful lists :P

I've never maintained the NES/Famicom DATs, your thinking of 'etabeta'.

I don't believe they are still active so I'm sure any contributions would be welcome.

Remember that some title variations can differ across regional releases though (and being convenient for 7zip/goodmerge or equivalent - I'm assuming that's what you doing - isn't a good enough reason to change it IMO). Just something to be careful off. Like PanMonium hinted at, *.NES versus *.UNF titles is an excellent example of where they absolutely should match however.

BTW: Why the American bias anyway? (yes, I'm stirring)  ;)

Hi Cassiel, my naming is being based strictly on the current names--I will not be 'adjusting' them to suit my specifications.  Through glancing, I'm simply looking for additions of tag info to offer, revealing associations, or suggesting title inaccuracies that may be easily proved otherwise, as I continue to use, without modification, the dat's current names as parents.

Hm.. this NES->UNF association did not occur to me.  I'll now take that into account and mark any of the above, and further, that have this relation.

And yes, I admit it--I was born and raised in the USA, so that's the way I'll continue to go.  Others are free to ask for the dat to change the order over to theirs if they want.. I have not yet learned how to tie that in based on region prioritization, and I assume it would have to be done manually anyway, following the completion of my dat.

Also, I'll be using clrmamepro's dirtodat and a rebuild to wrap the test raw product in zips with no compression, following up with torrent7z (t7z.sf.net).

Just checking in... *points up*  I've been at it :)  About 3/4 done I'd say, and it seems my main talent is matching hacks with their originals.  I'm double-posting to share a couple of excellent resources I've discovered for myself just tonight, yet I could've used them many many times earlier on!

http://cah4e3.shedevr.org.ru/cartsbase.php - Great to fill in those missing tags, this will save me having to fill in lots of reports I was planning on scribbling later (tagging stuff only, I'll continue to report relations).
http://famicomworld.com/game-list/ - This may actually be based on TOSEC, but if not, not bad.

Good findings i guess :P
As for the list i think it wasn't based on TOSEC, there are a bunch of other great projects out there too :P Anyway i just say this because they have some fields like "ID" that i think we don't (if yes it would be in more info on nes dats).

Good sources of information, a shame we don't have many renamers currently but at least it will be here in case anyone wants to do something with it :)
