IBM Disk Images (Contribution)
« on: October 07, 2010, 04:34:05 AM »
I've started dumping my original disks, before I continue I'd like to know if I'm on the right track.

So far, I have the dumped the following 3.5" disks:
Code: [Select]
Police Quest - In Pursuit of the Death Angel v2.0 (1992)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 1 of 5)(Startup)[vid ev][cp bad track - manual].ima
Police Quest - In Pursuit of the Death Angel v2.0 (1992)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 2 of 5)[vid ev].ima
Police Quest - In Pursuit of the Death Angel v2.0 (1992)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 3 of 5)[vid ev].ima
Police Quest - In Pursuit of the Death Angel v2.0 (1992)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 4 of 5)[vid ev].ima
Police Quest - In Pursuit of the Death Angel v2.0 (1992)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 5 of 5)[vid ev].ima
Police Quest - In Pursuit of the Death Angel v2.0G (1987)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 1 of 2)[vid e][cp manual].ima
Police Quest - In Pursuit of the Death Angel v2.0G (1987)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 2 of 2)[vid e].ima
Police Quest II - The Vengeance v1.001.000 (1988)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 1 of 3)[vid e][cp manual].ima
Police Quest II - The Vengeance v1.001.000 (1988)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 3 of 3)[vid e].ima
Police Quest II - The Vengeance v1.002.011 (1988)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 1 of 3)[vid e][cp manual].ima
Police Quest II - The Vengeance v1.002.011 (1988)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 2 of 3)[vid e].ima
Police Quest II - The Vengeance v1.002.011 (1988)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 3 of 3)[vid e].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 1 of 5)(Startup Disk)[vid v][cp manual].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 1 of 6)(Startup Disk)[vid e][cp manual].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 2 of 5)(Game Disk 1)[vid v].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 2 of 6)(Game Disk 1)[vid e].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 3 of 5)(Game Disk 2)[vid v].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 3 of 6)(Game Disk 3)[vid e].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 4 of 5)(Game Disk 3)[vid v].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 4 of 6)(Game Disk 3)[vid e].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 5 of 5)(Game Disk 4)[vid v].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 5 of 6)(Game Disk 4)[vid e].ima
Police Quest III - The Kindred v1.0 (1991)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 6 of 6)(Game Disk 5)[vid e].ima

Now on to the questions:
  • Regarding [cp bad track]. I've noticed I can only identify this using RawWrite as it fails to rip the disk correctly (CRC error). I am then able to rip it successfully using WinImage. I prefer WinImage however it will never identify [cp bad track]. My question is, is this important that this information is captured? If so it means I will have to use RawWrite in the first instance everytime, it also means any image previously ripped using WinImage (or another similar application) may be missing this info.
  • Regarding the naming structure. As you can see I have dumped two versions of Police Quest III; one is the 16 colour version and one 256 colour. I have used tosec standard to rename the files however this causes an issue (as observed above) where the disks from each version alternate. Obviously it would be better if the disks of each version were sequential (eg. the vid data was entered prior to the Disk 1 of #).
  • Regarding copy protection. Is it necessary to include the cp switch for all disks of the set or can it simply be added to the first disk (ie. cp manual/cp codebook) or to the applicable disk (ie. cp bad track)?
  • Regarding bad disks. You may notice Police Quest II - The Vengeance v1.001.000 (1988)(Sierra On-Line, Inc.)(Disk 2 of 3)[vid e].ima is missing. Unfortunately the disk has CRC issues that cannot be fixed using WinImage. Are there applications that other renamers are using to correct such issues? Also when a disk (as part of a set) cannot be imaged should the rest of the disks be imaged as I have done?
  • Regarding some existing switches. I've looked through existing images within the dat and noticed some switches that I don't understand. Is there somewhere I can find out more information? It would really be worthwhile if all switches used were documented (eg. [vid] switch values, [snd] switch values, [dos]/[win] switches - should these be used for all images?, [!] switch - when should this be used). Would be great if it was in a wiki or something.

Ok I think that's about it for now, all feedback is welcomed as I'd like to contribute more.
Thanks.

I'm in a hurry so will complete my answer later if something stays unexplained.

1) As for the copy protection errors, indeed it seems boring to do it 2 twice, can't WinImage identify that? Maybe asking about it in their forum? I suppose that that information may be valuable, but someone with more knowledge can give us some lights if it is indeed needed (or valuable or anything).

2) Yes, that happens a lot since the sets are ordered by name and there isn't much we can do. I'm not sure it applies in this case nor i have technical knowledge about the subject but there is a flag named "Video Flag", currently it is used basically with NTSC and PAL as values, anyway it was created long ago to support other values (it was before my time, i extracted them from TIM db). Some of these values are things like VGA, CGA, EGA and so on. If they do apply to that specific case and since they come before media flags, the sets will be correctly sorted :P. A complete list of video flags supported may be accessible here: http://www.tosecdev.org/temp/tosecdb/TOSEC%20Video%20Types%20XML.xml
Out of curiosity ,apart from the PAL/NTSC and variants, only EGA and VGA are used (and only once each).

3) the flag applies to the disks / sets affected, obviously. The same way that if you have one of the disks corrupted, you will only add the information to the corrupted disk and not all.

4) i've no knowledge about that, maybe Aral or any other renamer has :P

5) Indeed they should, my will is to catalog all about tosec, including the more info flag meanings. It has not been done yet or started but i'm sure one day it will :)
The [!] flag is the "Good Dump" flag, read about it in TNC document. Basically it indicates a set that is a verified good dump. This "verified" part is highly subjective and debatable.

btw, i think Aral is currently renaming / working with the IBM disks dats so he will be the one adding those sets to the dats.

Cya later!

Thanks PandMonium, very informative (even if you were in a hurry).

Based on your feedback I've made a few changes to the sets I've already uploaded to the ftp.
I guess the priority it to get the images into the database with some information.. it can always be modified later.

1) I will investigate further.
2) I've applied EGA/VGA flags in order to group sets and will continue to in the future.
3) Thanks, I will continue to apply [cp] flags only to the first disk in the set.
5) I'll leave the [!] flags off.

If Aral is renaming / working on the IBM disks dats it'd be great to catch up with him at some stage. I'm assuming he has access to the ftp I am uploading files to?
I'll continue to update this thread with any contributions.

Just a small note, the VGA, EGA, CGA flags can/should be used in video flag or they will be parsed as part of the version flag (if they are part of the version, they are ok this way), in other words, using the tncparser:

Code: [Select]

I think it should be just "Sierra On-Line", if I remember correct we once decided that stuff like Inc/Corp/Ltd/ etc. shouldn't be in the Publisher flag but I also know that it's still in the IBM DAT for now and wasn't yet modified.

Hello

New user here, so sorry if I'm missing something obvious...
It seems that these files have not been added to the dat for some reason...
Any idea why?

Thanks!

Not sure but probably due to the same reasons posted in the other topic. Lack of time, still to be added I guess.

Eagerly awaiting the next dat update - I have quite a few more disks to upload.

Who's leading the IBM Disk Images project? I'm keen to help.

Aral is currently maintaining the IBM PC DATs... if you give him a shout I'm sure he would be more than happy with the assistance.  :)

Sorry for being late, but are the images mentioned above anywhere available at all?
