TOSEC on GitHub (or equivalent) ?
« on: May 18, 2013, 09:30:54 AM »
Hi,

TOSEC is meant to be a collaborative effort as I understand it  ;), I was wondering if there would be any interest to host it on GitHub (or equivalent, Gitorious, Bitbucket ...).

I believe that would make it a lot easier to contribute to, as people would be able to do pull requests to contribute to a specific file. They wouldn't necessarily have to use the git client as most editing can be done directly on GitHub.
For maintainers, that would also make their life easier as it has nice features to display diffs between files (to see exactly what is the content of a pull request), and a pull request can be discussed and accepted/rejected, including an automatic merging. For rejection, the history of pull requests could be useful if someone wants to find out why a specific contribution has been rejected in the past.

What do you think of this idea ? I'm just wondering if there would be something more practical than forum posts or IRC for the casual contributor... It's sometime difficult to know where to start, whereas people are getting use to contributing to GitHub projects these days ;)

Cheers,

Nico

Hey again,

We have discussed that too, even the idea of using code control software. The current contribution / working method is outdated and indeed doesn't help sporadic contributions from random people. Still, SVN, git, mercurial or other software would also have its drawbacks to the type of work renamers tend to do. It's a complex subject because each renamer uses a different method (from editing dats, to rename the files and generate new dats, and so on).

The ideal solution would be some kind of wip system we have been talking for months but haven't had time to do something even close. In the meanwhile that kind of solution could indeed be used. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Just to bump this topic up.

I second the usage of a collaborative platform like GitHub, because for me it seems easier to participate on TOSEC. As I am a bloody TOSEC noob, I don't know where to start with my "contributions". (The only thing I can contribute for now is to "sync" the Nintendo TOSEC DATs with the latest No-Intro sets, because some Nintendo sets seems quite outdated or incomplete)

Best regards
