Download WIP updates ... where?
« on: May 30, 2010, 11:28:56 AM »
Is there a possibility to download the current WIP updates from somewhere?

First, I was very pleased that there is recent activity on the project, then I was very disappointed that these neat update posts seem to relate to something that the general public is blocked off.

Really, what is the point of posting WIP updates if the updates are not available? This is really strange and after doing some research on TOSEC as the project itself it also seems really .... odd in comparison to other stuff.

I really like TOSEC, but perhaps the team members should provide more updates, especially if there is some sort of "work in progress stuff" presents. This would help TOSEC more..

Some additional thoughts after reading through the WIP section:

It would help to speed up the completion of the DATs if you put them under some revision control system like SVN or something.

Publishing information about current work lets us know where are we now and what's exactly going on. At least that's how I see this. SVN could be good if we would have to edit DAT files manually every time we want to create an updated DAT. I just create a new one from a directory where I keep ROMs for a system I work on, so I can't see a point for making things more complicated.

Regular downloadable updates are one thing, it would already be better if there was more transparency and communication for the public on the news page.

We hear nothing from Tosec for years, then new dats are released and now it's in hibernation again :-\

It's just like Diaboł said, the WIP section is to see what's going on in TOSEC, the last years we never talked about our recent work and people didn't even know what's going on.
I'd like to have a release in summer but it's not easy to set a specific date. :/

It's hard to call it hibernation if you look at the WIP section. I work at leas few hours a day on T-I systems now, and other people update their sets from time to time. It takes quite a lot of time to search and rename new files. Checking existing sets for errors is also time consuming.

As has already been discussed, these WIP threads are exactly that: work in progress.

These can just as easily be moved to a private TOSEC member's only area too, it's just obviously more preferable to to communicate what is currently being worked on publicly. Surely that was the point of your previous post re Nintendo Hand-helds?

Anyway, I do agree that the project in general needs to be more disciplined in having structured/frequent releases, but as TKaos mentions, this is often a challenge to organise on a relatively frequent basis, though I do sincerely hope we would never get into a situation again like that last 2 years of apparent (public) non-activity.....
