Hope it's OK for me to start a new topic here.

Uploaded new versions of the Camputers Lynx Games and Demos dats.

Demos - minor cosmetic fixes. The Ubuntu archiver by default adds the file extension to the archive name, so I had a few ".tap.zip" files in there. "The Forest" changed to "Forest, The"
Games - some minor fixes (FR) -> (fr), etc., some names / publishers changed based on adverts in magazines.

Pretty much done with the Lynx at this point. I've been through all the magazines I've got and compiled a big list of all known software, as well as the type-in listings from all of them. This is in my folder on the gorski ftp as "software list.ods". There's a lot of stuff produced for it that hasn't been dumped, so I'll keep an eye out.

I've been playing around with getting the type-in listings saved to .tap files. "Rising Moon" in demos is kind of a proof of concept of this, typed by hand into PALE. The longer ones are going to have to be OCR'd, corrected and pasted into MESS (if I can get it working), as I don't fancy typing-in ~1000 lines of code by hand.

Thanks. It's a pretty small set of updates, and it took me while, but I should be quicker now I'm more confident with the TNC.

Next on my list is the Applied Technology MicroBee. I have a few disks for that and from what I can see it doesn't look like anyone's working on it currently.

No, nobody's working on it atm so fill your boots!

I had renamed the four images we do have (and renamed the DAT from 'Various' to 'Operating System') I just hadn't submitted the DAT yet (was going to submit with a few other 'unmaintained' DATs ready for the next release).

I've uploaded here:
http://www.redsplinter.com/tosec/microbee.zip

but feel free to disregard/expand as you see fit.  :)

Currently stalled on the Microbee due to lack of images to rename so I've been working on some other things. New dats uploaded today:

Tiki Data Kontiki & Tiki-100 - Applications
Tiki Data Kontiki & Tiki-100 - Compilations - Applications
Tiki Data Kontiki & Tiki-100 - Compilations - Games
Tiki Data Kontiki & Tiki-100 - Educational
Tiki Data Kontiki & Tiki-100 - Firmware
Tiki Data Kontiki & Tiki-100 - Games
Tiki Data Kontiki & Tiki-100 - Operating Systems

It's a new system to TOSEC, so I thought I should give a little info on it. It's a Norwegian microcomputer, mostly used in schools by the look of it (the vast majority of the software is in the "Educational" category). While it was mostly sold as the Tiki-100, early in life (and in the earliest firmware) it was sold as the "Kontiki" (thus the dual name in the dats). The reason for the name change was a legal threat from the Thor Heyerdahl Society, which owned the rights to the "Kontiki" name.

I've recently been playing around with the various Thomson systems, as I have around 700 files not in the dats (looks like a lot of them might be [a] dumps rather than brand new titles, unfortunately). I've also been going through the old dats and renaming / splitting them. There are a lot of sets which are single image sets which are part of a larger series, and I'm not entirely sure how to go about naming these. To give an example, look at this picture. I have named this as follows:
Code: [Select]
Mathematiques CM - Mesures et Grandeurs - Aires et Volumes (1985)(Vifi Nathan)(FR)
Not sure if this is correct.

Splitting / renaming the Thomson sets continues slowly - loading each tape fully to verify it is taking a fair bit of time, even sped up to ~1000%. I'm up to around G in the MO5 - Various - K7 set, so still a fair way to go (and there's still the big multi-tape sets which I've been skipping past as these are especially annoying to verify). Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I should have all the Thomson sets fully splitted and can start work on adding the new images I have.

I've temporarily removed a few sets so far, going to put my reasoning for doing so here in the hope that someone can help me with them.

Code: [Select]
Felonies (1986)(Ere Informatique) and [a] -- both cut to a black screen a few seconds after loading, the MESS tape-loading dialog disappears (which I've not seen happen on any other image, even bad ones). MESS gives warning "the k5 has an unknown structure and may not work" but it does that for almost every image I've tested. Filenames on the tape image also look kinda weird - "?`?@?P? .  ?". Not sure this even belongs in MO5.

Frontier (198x)(CDDP) -- can get to title screen and no further. Can find no information about it at this time. Probably educational.

Game Over (1987)(FIL) -- works fine, the title screen after loading gives the game title then "Converted by James Higgins". Not sure if this needs to be added to tags or not

Ghostbuster (1989)(Christophe Lesur) changed to Ghostbusters (1989)(Lesur, Christophe)(FR)[b load twice] -- not sure how to phrase the [b] info on this. After loading into MESS and typing "LOAD", it finds "PGHOST.BAS" first. If you attempt to run at this point, it gives an error. If you type "LOAD" again, however, it loads the rest of the tape and finds "GHOST5.BAS". At this point, typing "RUN" will make the game work.

So I'm nearly done splitting / renaming the existing MO5 set, just a few more ZZZ-UNKs to get through. I've been doing some reading on the compatibility of the systems, and I don't think keeping them in separate dats for MO5, MO6, etc. is the correct way. Rather, I would propose splitting the dats along system lines, as follows:

Thomson MO5, MO5E, MO5NR, MO6 & Prodest PC128 (MOx family)
Thomson TO7, TO7/70, TO8, TO8D, TO9 & TO9+ (TOx family)

System flags could then be used to mark games which are only compatible with certain systems within those families.

An example -

"Some French Game (1988)(FIL)(FR)" was written for the MO6, but is also compatible with the MO5, so no system flag is needed
"Some French Game 2 (1989)(FIL)(FR)" was written for the MO6 and is incompatible with the MO5, thus the set should be "Some French Game 2 (1989)(FIL)(MO6)(FR)"
"Some French Game 3 (1990)(FIL)(FR)" was written for the TO8 and is compatible with that and the TO9, but not the TO7, thus the set should be "Some French Game 3 (1989)(FIL)(TO8-TO9)(FR)"

Completely finished with the old MO5 dats. Listed below are the moved, temporarily removed and some changes I'm not too certain about. If anyone is interested, there's a text file attached with all significant changes. Note that this is still very much WIP. I suspect many of the temporarily removed and ['b] flagged images will turn out to be compatible with one of the other MOx variants.

Thomson MO5 - Various - BIN split to

Applications - BIN (4 files)
Games - BIN (2 files)

Thomson MO5 - Various - K7 split to

Applications - K7 (53 items)
Compilations - Applications (1 item)
Compilations - Educational (2 items)
Compilations - Games (5 items)
Compilations - Various (1 item)
Covertapes (2 items)
Educational (175 items)
Games - K7 (364 items)

Moved -- note that these may be moved back if dats are split by family as suggested above
Code: [Select]
ZZZ-UNK-animamo6 -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-aquanaut -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-bactron -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-bivouac -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-bobchev1 -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-bobjung1 -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-bobsf1 -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-bugmarch -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-businit -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-entropi -- moved to PC128
ZZZ-UNK-fbimo6 -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-flippard -- moved to PC128
ZZZ-UNK-gbereten -- moved to PC128
ZZZ-UNK-kya -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-mach3 -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-marche -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-passager -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-silentse -- moved to MO6
ZZZ-UNK-spacerac -- moved to MO6

Temporarily removed
Code: [Select]
Cannot identify these using MESS and have not yet found any other identifying info. These will be checked with every MO5 emulator I can find, then gone through with a hex editor, then checked against emulators for other Thomson systems. I would argue for the removal of anything left after that.

Frontier (198x)(CDDP) - can get to title screen and no further. Can find no information about it at this time. Probably educational.
Game Over (1987)(FIL) - works fine, the title screen after loading gives the game title then "Converted by James Higgins". Not sure if this needs to be added to tags or not
Mcass (198x)(-) and Mdsk (198x)(-) - neither work, MESS gives error on loading "WARNING: this does not look like a MO or TO cassette."
T2 (198x)(-)(PD) changed to T2 (198x)(-)(FR)(PD)[b] -- contains T2.BAS and T2.BIN. Using LOAD results in an error. Using LOADM"",,R once gives an error, but using it again loads T2.BIN successfully. However, there are no visible results when running the program, and no confirmation that it actually does anything.
ZZZ-UNK-androit -- Loading with LOAD gives error 51. Loading with LOADM"",,R appears to load but continues to run beyond the length of the tape. No other identifying info at this point.
ZZZ-UNK-bobo -- as above.
ZZZ-UNK-chasseur -- Loads and runs but no title screen or other identifying information. Could change to Chasseur (19xx)(-), which is no more informative but at least avoids using ZZZ-UNK
ZZZ-UNK-crepusc -- fails to load
ZZZ-UNK-desas4 -- fails to load. "WARNING: this does not look like a MO or TO cassette". Probably part of Desassembleur - Dump et Patch v4.0 (1986)(DCsoft)
ZZZ-UNK-dieuxgli -- fails to load, loading runs longer than tape
ZZZ-UNK-dieuxmer -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-dinosaur -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-eredita -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-felonies -- see Felonies (1986)(Ere Informatique) above
ZZZ-UNK-football -- see above. Probably Football (1987)(Infogrames)[b]
ZZZ-UNK-heritag2 -- see above
ZZZ-UNK-Martiens -- runs with LOADM"",,R, but crashes out and corrupts the screen after ~2mins of loading. Probably belongs to one of the other systems.
ZZZ-UNK-menace -- loads, error on running. may be "Menace sur l'Arctique" from CHIP.
ZZZ-UNK-minediam -- fails to load, etc.
ZZZ-UNK-music3v -- loads, error on running. Most likely "Music 3V" from Loriciels
ZZZ-UNK-prohibfr -- see ZZZ-UNK-crepusc, etc.
ZZZ-UNK-prohibit -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-saphir -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-scarfi -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-snaky -- gives error while loading. Probably "Snaky" from 1990 (publisher unknown)
ZZZ-UNK-sorcery -- fails to load, etc.
ZZZ-UNK-sortileg -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-stade2 -- as above
ZZZ-UNK-tbzzz -- error while loading
ZZZ-UNK-tetris -- as above. could be any one of four known Tetris titles.
ZZZ-UNK-vampire -- see ZZZ-UNK-sorcery, etc. Probably "Vampire" from Infogrames

Uncertain changes
Code: [Select]
Histogra (1985)(FIL) changed to Histogrammes (1985)(FIL)(FR) -- While "Histogra" is the title given on the loading screen, along with the FIL copyright notice, when the programme fully loads the title screen gives the title as "Histogrammes". A lot of the CNDP images share this issue

Espagnol (19xx)(-) changed to Espagnol (198x)(Nathan)(FR)[m single tape] -- looks like a modified version of the existing three-tape set. Placed in Educational for now, not sure if it belongs in Compilations - Educational

Multiplication (1985)(Cedic-Nathan)(FR) changed to Mathematiques Calculs - Multiplication (1985)(Cedic-Nathan)(FR)[m title screen]I -- looks to be the same program as this (http://dcmoto.free.fr/programmes/maths-calculs-multiplication/index.html) minus the title screen and with a different copyright notice. Suspect this may be a TO7 release modified for MO5, but cannot back that up with evidence yet.

Navire (1985)(USTL) to Navire (1985-09-13)(USTL - IREM)(FR) -- this should maybe be Collection USTL-IREM Serie I - Navire (1985-09-13)(USTL - IREM)(FR)

Pacman 2 (1985)(Remi Coulom)(PD) changed to Pac-man v2 (1998-06-06)(Coulom, Remi)(FR)(PD) -- the dcmoto site suggests this is Pacman 2 (1985)(DCsoft), but I can see no evidence for that in the image itself and considering how badly they got the date wrong (despite showing a screenshot of the loading screen with version and date) I'm not willing to trust any of the other info on this.

Pourcentages (198x)(-)(PD) changed to Pourcentages (198x)(-)(FR)(PD)[b] -- crashes when you select "Intrus" from the menu. Not sure if this is a bad dump or simply a buggy program.

Renegade (1988)(Ocean)(Tape 1 of 2) changed to Renegade (1988)(Wise Owl Software)(Tape 1 of 2) -- Ocean made the original, Wise Owl did the conversion for MO5. dcmoto site suggests FIL released this, but offers no evidence for it.

Reverse (198x)(Sylvain Huet-Daniel Coulom)(PD) changed to Reverse (198x)(Gasoline Software)(FR)(PD)[h Coulom, Daniel] -- title screen reads "REVERSE par Sylvain HUET & GASOLINE SOFTWARE. Adapte pour MO5 par Daniel Coulom"

Roger & Paulo (1985)(Infogrames)[b] changed to Roger et Paulo (1984)(Infogrames)(FR)[MLOAD"",,R] -- some few cassettes have BIN files rather than BAS files on them and need to be loaded with MLOAD"",,R not LOAD (the cause of the [b] tag, I would guess).

Satel (1985)(CNDP) changed to Simulation de l'Evolution d'Un Objet dans un Champ de Gravitation (1985)(CNDP)(FR) -- not sure if I've got the capitalisation right on all the words.

Sich Vorstellen (1985)(FIL) changed to Sich Vorstellen (1985)(FIL)(FR)(fr-de) -- not sure of the language tags on this one. It's a piece of educational software for teaching German, with a brief bit of French followed entirely by German.

ZZZ-UNK-assimil1 changed to Nouvel Espagnol Sans Peine, Le (1985)(Assimil)(FR)(Part 1-2 of 8) -- not sure on the Media Type tags here. This consists of four images, containing two lessons each. As far as I can tell, per this image (http://dcmoto.free.fr/programmes/assimil-espagnol/c2.png), this originally came on 8 cassettes (or possibly 4 double-sided cassettes, my French isn't very good). Not sure if these should be, eg. (Tape 1-2 of 8), (Tape 1 of 4)(Side A & Side B). Used (Part 1-2 of 8) just now.

ZZZ-UNK-basicsp changed to Auto-initiation au Basic MO5 (1984)(To Tek)(Tape 1 of X)(FR) -- title screen lists this as "Cassette 1 - du chapitre 1 au chapitre 6". Don't know how many other tapes are in the series and do not have any images for them.

ZZZ-UNK-pcuser9 changed to PC User #9 Cassette (1987)(PC User)(IT)[b] -- may belong to PC128. MESS only reports seeing two files: "MENU.BAS" and "AGENDA.BAS", where the menu seems to offer four games (Agenda, Blackjack,Mortaio,PCSimon). Possibly a [u] dump?

ZZZ-UNK-pilote changed to Pilot (1984)(Infogrames)(FR) -- not 100% on this one. Cover scan (http://dcmoto.free.fr/programmes/pilot/c1.jpg) says "Pilot", title screen (http://dcmoto.free.fr/programmes/pilot/01.png) says "Pilote"

ZZZ-UNK-rangerdesnombres-carremagique changed to Mathematiques Calculs - Ranger des Nombres & Carre Magique (1985)(Nathan Ecoles)(FR) -- not sure if this should be Mathematiques Calculs - Ranger des Nombres & Mathematiques Calculs - Carre Magique (1985)(Vifi-Nathan)(FR)

ZZZ-UNK-reverse changed to Reverse (198x)(Gasoline Software)(FR)(PD)[a][h Coulom, Daniel] -- see above for further details

Latest updates:

Realised I was talking out of my backside about the compatibility of the systems, so they'll stay split into MO5, MO6, etc., with some system flags being used as necessary (for example, for MO5 NanoReseau disks or PC128 tapes). One other change - all the "BIN" dats for MO5 are now "M5". This is in line both with what MESS expects for this type of file (it accepts either M5 or ROM extensions, but I don't like ROM) and with the original hardware (MEMO5 for MO5 / MEMO7 for TO7). Latest dats and new files are in my FTP folder.

A quick rundown of the new dats:

Thomson MO5 - Applications - K7
Thomson MO5 - Applications - M5
Thomson MO5 - Applications - QD
Thomson MO5 - Applications - WAV

Are M5 versus BIN/ROM definitely the same though? M5 don't have an added header or something like that do they?

Re DAT names, remember file format needs bracketing, e.g [WAV], [M5] etc.

Good work though  :)

RE: BIN / M5 / ROM

As far as I'm aware they're exactly the same thing, just named differently. I'm not 100% sure how to tell, but MESS doesn't complain when loading .BIN files renamed to .M5, and the .BIN files from the old TOSEC dat and .ROM and .M5 files I've found elsewhere look very much the same in a hex editor (I haven't checked everything this way yet, but I had a look at "6809 Language Module 1.0 (1984)(Microsoft)(en)", which was renamed from the old Various - BIN dat, and "6809 Language Module 1.0 (1984)(Microsoft)(en)[a]", which was found elsewhere in .ROM format. There are no immediately obvious distinctions between them and, like I say, MESS will load both without a whisper of complaint.

I've (finally!) deep checked your 'Camputers Lynx' and 'Tiki Data' DATs and added them to the pile for the next release.

I had to correct some of the headers, and I had to make a few corrections to file extension cases. Nothing major.

I have moved your originals on the FTP to a separate folder, and re-uploaded these amended ones.

The only major issue I found is with the 'Camputers Lynx - Demos' DAT. It would appear 4 images have been removed. Can you you let me know this is?

How 'WIP' are your Thompson DATs?

With the work done so far, can they reasonably replace the current DATs if we include them in the next release?

(I know you still have lots of images you want to add)

Re: Camputers Lynx dats (from my notes in the thread "Some newbie questions")

Code: [Select]
SimDisc (19xx)(Death Todd)
SimDisc (19xx)(Death Todd)[a] -- cannot get any of these to work in PALE, on any system, unsure whether all should be flagged as [b]
SimDisc (19xx)(Death Todd)[b]
Wowee (19xx)(-) -- doesn't seem to do anything, is only 14 bytes in size. I would argue for removal.

Re: Thomson dats - I've only worked on MO5 so far, but those dats should reasonably replace the old dats. They have everything from the old set (minus a few files temporarily removed for checking) plus a bunch of new stuff (WAV, QD, etc.). Ideally, I'd like to finish up work on the current batch of K7 files I'm renaming (about 100 to go) and do some quick checks and that should be MO5 ~99% done. That should be done by Sunday at the latest.

Re Camputers Lynx

SimDisc: I guess a 'b' flag is appropriate for all three. They look like there's 'something' there at least.
Wowee: See what you mean. Looks like nothing/garbage. Happy to dump.

Re Thomson MO5

That's excellent news..... I'll wait till you happy with what you got then check the DATs. The next release won't be quite yet (still waiting on Aral's PIX DATs) so there's time.

Thanks for all your work so far.
